    Tree ID please

Easiest way to differentiate Doug firs from hemlocks, if they still have a top, is the tip of a fir will be straight up, hemlock will have a shepherd‘s hook at the tip. Also, hemlock has very small cones compared to fir

    cutting roots in dirt.

Use a corded recip saw with a pruning blade, I routinely cut 10-12’’ fir roots with one. They handle hitting soil way better than a chain and come in a variety of lengths.

No More Heating With Firewood In New York?

This thread is a perfect example of whats happening all over. A semi-accurate thread is posted designed to rile up one side or the other and plenty of people take the bait. So disappointing.

    PRIVET AS FIREWOOD

I've burned a lot of rhododendron, it's actually pretty dense and gives some serious heat.

Ok guys, who burnt the most thread!

Mild winter here, went through just over 2.5 cords, a full 2 less than normal. It hit 80 a few days ago but has really been wet. Peas, spinach, and lettuce are up, tomatoes are in the hoop house and grass is growing like mad.

Leaving firewood in the bush until later

We always split and stack on some straight branches where the tree was dropped and bring it back when it's seasoned. Why haul water? Stacking doesn't take that much time after you've figured out a good system and the results are certainly better .

A litte upside to this winter?

Have to have sustained temps below -30F to kill off EAB, from what state entomologists say.

    Poping trees

Actually, some of the commercial producers cut the tips off maple branches and use a vacuum to accelerate sap collection, pulling moisture up through the roots. It's being done on maples planted specifically for syrup, where they are planted much closer together and allows much younger trees to...

    Poping trees

Have any of you guys tapped birch, box elder (Manitoba maple) or black walnut? Just heard a really interesting podcast about sugaring by a Cornell prof. discussing a book he had just written on the subject. WS, while I often disagree with your political leaning, I am usually impressed with...

    What's your bill ?

We have an all electric house but heat with wood. Have a space heater at opposite end of house that's on for about 4 hrs. per evening when it's below 40. We pay .086 for first 600 per kw, then .104 per kw above that. Level pay plan keeps us at $125 per month, mainly for hot water and dryer.

    Just 12 days...

Wait, why did I leave Iowa? I'll try to remember while I'm cutting my grass tomorrow!

    Disaster relief chainsaw volunteers needed

Through HS in WI in the 60's and 70's, Purdue in the 70's. Things were a little different back then. Still have a lake cabin in N WI, some things seem just stuck in time when we are back. Lived in Adel, IA for a few years, calling on NAPA stores so I got into about every burg in the state...

    February Blizzard

Daffodils are up here and I had to refill the hummingbird feeder again. They stayed all winter again this year, even when it was on the teens.

    Disaster relief chainsaw volunteers needed

Actually, the education I received in WI and IN was all about critical thinking, not sure what you think you were subjected to.

    Disaster relief chainsaw volunteers needed

A self educated man, that's impressive. Tell us again how you taught yourself to read and write, I missed that part. Also, I don't think you have to worry about too many people moving to Iowa!

Have you guys looked at a powered stair walking dolly? A friend of mine rented one to put a gun safe on the second floor, best $46 ever spent!

    Moving wood to house

My neighbor has a slick desgn in his 70 year old farmhouse that was originally heated by a large brick fireplace. On either side of the fieplace are what look like two 2 ft. wide cabinet doors. When you open them, they expose a 5 ft. wide by 6ft. tall bumpout shed that has one large door...
