Limiting Cylinder Stroke on Log Splitter

I've got a stroke limiter on my splitter. Cylinder is a 30" but the stop plate can be set between 19" limit minimum with adjustments every two inches. I normally run it at 21". The splitter has auto cycle valves along with a dump valve to speed up return and abate heat.

How hot should hydraulic fluid get in a splitter?

It was custom made by Alex of A.E. Metalwerx. There are a ton of features that aren't obvious. 30" stroke with limiter for rounds of 19"-30" Dump valve Auto cycle Very high capacity filter rated for 125GPM Large rod for faster retract BTW, you can see the port for the heater.

How hot should hydraulic fluid get in a splitter?

The builder also suggested using less oil, but I didn't want to drain it. 2nd, the tank holds 35 gallons, it has a port for a threaded heater if I want to install one but the cooler temps really don't hurt anything. The insulation does help some. I am thinking the hottest the splitter ever...

How hot should hydraulic fluid get in a splitter?

I've got the opposite problem most have with splitters and that is it runs too cold. I split in the Winter and the garage is a minimum of 45 degrees. After 4 hours of running the fluid was at best 60 degrees. I ended up insulating the tank and now the fluid gets up to close too 90 which is...

    Cutting wedges

Chipper 1, you are real close to doing this in a manner that I feel is correct. I learned this watching the guys who buck logs all day long on log landings and they have two rules: 1. It must be cut off, so as to not pull any fiber when the cut to length logs are picked up. 2. Minimize the...

    Cutting wedges

You guys have probably never used a hard nosed bar. The hard nosed bar makes plunge cutting dramatically easier than a roller nose. It is pretty effortless to start the plunge and once the bar is 2-3" in it cannot kick back. The hard nosed bar also tolerates dirt a whole lot better. With 404...

Decided to add some need things to the chipper.

Great idea, simplicity is the best. I made a scabbard to fit on the roll bar of the tractor and it didn't work worth a $hit.

    Cutting wedges

1st off I will qualify that I cut cable skidded logs that are very dirty. Technique is huge on keeping the chain sharp longer AND for not getting the bar stuck in large logs. So I do what my logger friends do while bucking logs on the landing. A plunge cut is made about 3-4" from the top of...

    Finally the new splitter

Well I am done for the season, finished today. Way later than usual. It was super cold in Feb. and I had to use a small 25 ton splitter for about 2/3rds of the pile. Put the log lift to the test today with a large round. It was so big I could not budge it off the cut end and had to get a cant to...

    Finally the new splitter

Maples are budding out here, people who make syrup say the season is done and was a poor one? Got one, will this do?

    Finally the new splitter

Can't tell you exactly because it changes. It has a 30" stroke, but with the custom stop that limits the return to whatever you want it varies. Right now it only returns to 21" The inner rod is 3.5" and with the dump valve it hits aprox 50GPM on the return stroke so it is quick. The in tank...

    Finally the new splitter

Well it is certainly capable of it, handles interstate speeds just fine. I image syrup collecting season is over, done cooking yet?

    Finally the new splitter

Batteries are just another thing to take care of. The splitter is kept in a heated garage, the coldest it will ever be is 45 degrees and the Hondas I have had, including this one start on one pull, so why have electric start?

    Finally the new splitter

Well I waited 3.5 years for this. Alex from A.E.Metalwerx came through in a big way. After seeing his build going back almost 6 years ago, I knew this is the one I wanted: https://www.arboristsite.com/community/threads/been-gone-for-a-while-heres-a-few-splitters-ive-built-recently.287746/...

    "You Suck" Thread 2021"--Pics required!

Average load of firewood I get from my logger buddies. I bribe them with apples, they load it for me. Got 6 loads so far this season, but the Superintendent at the golf course has a bunch more for me too. He also loads the trailer and gets apples in return, but hey, they are real nice apples.

    Best Hookeroon/Pickeroon?

I've had a couple Logrite 36" for years. the tips were getting a little trashed so I installed the new upgraded tips and kept the old ones to make a long handled pickaroon for unloading rounds out of the 8' box on the truck. I can reach everything except the last rank behind the cab.

    What WOOD you do?

Very astute observation. You nailed it regarding the relatively short wedge on very big blocks. Some were in the 30+" range. Since this was ash and stringy, it would not split all the way. The round can be easily dislodged by having a very small split hand, wedge it against the round and end...
