    Finally the new splitter

Well I waited 3.5 years for this. Alex from A.E.Metalwerx came through in a big way. After seeing his build going back almost 6 years ago, I knew this is the one I wanted: https://www.arboristsite.com/community/threads/been-gone-for-a-while-heres-a-few-splitters-ive-built-recently.287746/...

    What WOOD you do?

Every season I start from scratch scrounging up a few rounds to keep me busy in Jan-Feb splitting due to living in this God forsaken State. Been at it now for a good 6 weeks and have run out of space to put it unless I put out more pallets. The stack is 150' long by 4 rows that are 4' high. A...

    Started the new season

Earlier in the week I delivered about 110#s of Honeycrisp apples to my logger buddies and they said, "want some oak?". Since I was going anyway, I took the trailer. Normally I get log cut offs which are very large and harder to deal with. This time they had CULL LOGS! Threw so many on the...

    Never argue with an idiot

I am on another forum, (not firewood) and this guy posts this video of cutting down a tree. I made the following comment: Wow, just wow????? It is amazing more people don't kill themselves cutting down trees. No face cut, No PPE, absolutely clueless of proper hinge technique and we won't...

Scraping the bottom of the barrel

Normally only cut Red & White Oak, Hickory and Cherry. But the private Golf Club I belong to was cutting a huge # of ash. Cut in 8' 4" lengths loaded into my trailer about 4 miles from my house. The only down side was small stuff by my standards and suckers on the arm wood as the tree strived to...

    Bring on the Zombies

I replaced the tips on two of my Log Rite 36" hookaroons with the new style. Took one of the old tips and made a 6' hookaroon for pulling rounds/splits out of the back of the truck. Could also be a big city "wal king stick".

    Wood progress so far

Well thought I'd post a few pics of this years progress and or lack of it. Weather was super muddy a good chunk of the fall then we got a fair amount of snow. One log landing has some real nice Red & White Oak, aprox 8 cord but has been impossible to access with the soft conditions. I almost...

    25 ton Black Diamond splitter

Anybody know anything about this brand? A little background: A good buddy of mine lives in Northern WI in the snow belt and is an avid snowmobiler. He has a OWB that has incredible appetite for wood and I help him with processing firewood. In return he lets me keep my sled and 23' in line...

    I never catch a break!

I've got a property with two log landings I have been working and an old one with black walnut, (campfire wood) that I need to finish. The golf course Superintendent wants me to help with the 50-60 ash trees that have to come down and a bunch of oak with oak wilt this Winter. Earlier in the...

    Smart comment by loader operator

Today my logger buddies were in the area. They had called and wanted MORE Honeycrisp apples that I just happen to grow. (I have an orchard with 680 trees). So I took them a couple more bushel and brought my 18 foot, 10,000# capacity trailer with to get some wood. I normally only take red &...

Any body build a carry all box for pallet forks?

Help. I just bought a Case DX33 with L130 loader for use in my apple orchard. But since I have this, it might work pretty nice for firewood too. I just ordered a quick attach bracket for the loader so bob cat style implements can be easily used. Will get pallet forks first thing. What I...

    Got a loader tractor today

I picked up a gently used Case IH DX33 (398 hours) to run a air blast sprayer in my orchard. It could come in handy for some firewood work too. Here is the sprayer.

    Calling it quits

Well I am done with firewood for the season. Finished Thursday, got the mess cleaned up yesterday. Just in time, golfing is in full swing and we play 18 holes every day and the 680 apple trees are now requiring attention. The first spray went on yesterday and the will need another by mid week...

    Conundrum, what would you do?

I normally process about 25 cord but sometimes a little more. The stack is 150' long, 4 rows deep and 4'4" tall on pallets. This year I am about on track and have 110' of the 150' ranked in rounds to be split for when the snow gets deeper. So............ The Country Club I belong...

What is with the term, saw is wearing xx" bar???

Where in the world did this terminology come from. I wear a pair of pants.:guitar: Hot girls hopefully are wearing none.:rock::happybanana: Saws are fitted to with bars of varying lengths within a specific range. Often much longer than is appropriate for the task and size of the...

    Picked up a new/used splitter

I wanted a splitter with a log lift and hydraulically adjustable 4 way wedge. I attempted to have Alex of A. E. Metawerx make a custom unit but could not get it done this year. Too bad as his are the nicest splitters I have ever seen. Anyway I picked up a used Iron & Oak Commercial unit with...

Made some firewood racks for the truck

Made some firewood racks for the F250 Super Duty: Cut a small load today but it is mighty hot, in the mid 90's.

Modifying a cheap grinder into a Silvey 510 style

This is a project I started on a couple years ago with the help of a friend who is an amazing machinist. The thought was to replicate a Silvey 510 style vice on a $100 Tecomec grinder. The problem with all grinders IMHO except the Silvey is the fact they clamp the chain on the bottom at the...

    Finished splitting yesterday

Well I am pretty much done with firewood for the season. Now it is just a matter of Sun, Wind and Summer heat to make some pretty darn nice firewood. In the center you can see about 6 cord of Black Walnut, the campfire folks really liked it a lot last year. Smells good when burning and has a...
