    Elm this, and Elm that...

In north Louisiana we have a lot of winged elm(ulmus alata) it smells like somebody pissed on the fire when you burn it, it is twisty kinda like sweetgum(liquedamber styraciflua) but much harder. Hence the expression "harder than a piss elum club". Cheers!

Just wondering, what does chewing the inner bark of slippery elm do? We only have winged elm and a few American elms in my region.

where to get good replacment handles

I like my Fiskar splitting axe X27 or whatever it's called, but I love my old Keen Kutter for cutting wood. It's a 4 1/2 lb razor blade mounted on a 32" piece of American hickory and it's been around for over 100 years. It's just a fine tool and I appreciate a fine tool.

where to get good replacment handles

The sapwood makes better striking tool handles, it has more spring to it. I make a few when I have time, hickory is good, but I like white oak too, specially since it's a little easier/faster to work. And they seem to last me just as long. The important thing is grain orientation. Think of a...

Want to Trade Nice McCulloch Super Pro 60

I have a Husky 350 I bought new in 1999. The rubber mounts are shot, but the saw runs great. It has an 18" bar on it. I can send pictures later this week, but if you get a trade you like sooner, go ahead and no hard feelings. I like my 350 just fine, but I like them old Macs too.

Looks like an early winter for the south!

My Dad worked in that mill in the late 60s,we lived in Dodson until '77. Still go eat fish there once in a while. Dodson will always be my home town. It's still in the 80s out in the Gulf, but I can't wait to get back on land and enjoy the cooler weather.

    All time most reliable saws?

My old PM700 is still kicking hard after many years of cutting. In the newer class of saws, I'd have to say my Stihl 460 is the most reliable.

    Woodpile rats

I use a poison called "Just One Bite" they come in bars and I put a bar of it into a short 3' piece of 4" pvc. this keeps away the non-target animals and works very good on rats and mice. Snakes will follow the rats, so I don't like having them around. Nothing like uncovering a coiled up...
