Best way to clean a spark plug

What's the best way to clean a spark plug that is fairly new and looks mechanically ok but is black? White spirits? I believe that caustic soda removes soot from stove windows, so that might work for spark plugs too?

    Saw starter for weak persons!

Hi guys, I own a 064 that constantly has had problems starting. I have been fiddling with it for a long time and I believe that I have been pulling the rope to try to start it a couple of hundred times. It does not have a decompression valve:( and I wonder whether it is the biggest Stihl...

    Help! 064 won't start

Hi Guys, I'm sorry if this post is a little long but I am really frustrated over my 064:(. I bought the saw off ebay a couple of years ago. Contrary to some of you that have bought saws on ebay, this saw was in quite good condition. However, it was somewhat difficult to start. It had a Bing...

    Electric power generator standby

We had (again) a power outage in Sweden after a storm. This time it lasted a full week, so I went out and bought a (Chinese) 3-phase electric power generator. I know that many of you people live in rural areas and have the same problem. My question is: How often do you test-start your generators...

Pulling cord with no spark plug

Will it damage the ignition coil to pull the start cord when the spark plug cable is not fixed to the spark plug, or when the spark plug cable is on a sparkplug that is not mounted in the saw and not grounded? I assume that when you pull the cord you generate a high voltage. When it becomes...

    Damaged Nikasil coating

Hi Guys, Thanks to Lakeside and other good advice here, I have now (finally) overhauled my 084. The piston was scored, so I installed a new. The cylinder was also damaged. First, I used 30% muriatic acid to remove the aluminum on the coating of the cylinder. It seemed to work ok but it was...

    Can I use this cherry?

Hi guys, I have been offered this cherry log and stump. Can I use it for any good woodworking projects and how do I mill it to profit the most from the stump? Or, is it a waste of time? Thanks Tom PS: It's 25 inches in diameter

    Recovery of a scored cylinder

Guys, I have some scoring under the exhaust port of my Stihl 084. I checked with one of the e-Bay sellers of piston kits whether he would also have an aftermarket cylinder, but he didn't. Instead, he gave me the following advice which makes a lot of sense to me. Anyway, before going ahead, I...

Nails in logs: What do you do?

Guys, Assume that you have a fine log and, using a metal detector, you find something suspicious inside that could be a nail, but you don't know because you can't see it. Then what do you do? Do you dump the log, do you cut away the part of the log that has the steel part embedded, or do you...

    Log supports for Alaskan milling?

Guys, I am milling a few logs each winter with an Alaskan for my hobby woodshop. I find that manipulating the logs is the largest part of the job, so I wonder whether one couldn't make that much easier using a "log scaffolding" with two large logs on the side of a sloped hill? That way I...

    Stacking, drying, warping...?

Guys, I am milling wood for my small woodshop. I attach a photo of some oak that I milled last winter. I consistently have a problem and most of my neighbors also have it. Because of too little weight on the top of the pile, the upper third of the wood tends to warp during the summer to the...

How to read X-numbers in parts lists

Guys, I am looking at the Stihl parts lists and I see that some parts are marked with asterix's (asterices I guess) and an arrow pointing to an X-number. I understand that it has to do with modifications from Stihl but what is the exact meaning?

    How to paint a Stihl?

Is a bar nose sprocket needed for milling?

Hi Guys, I just bought a 41" Stihl bar for my 084. I paid 201 US dollars for it, expensive stuff here in Sweden. To my grief I now see that it does not have a sprocket tip. I will use this for milling and my opinion is that for milling one should definitely use a bar with a sprocket tip. It's...
