How do you get 1.5 cords into a half-ton pickup... (pics)

BWAAHHHHAHAHA! Nice setup ya got there Cantoo, but why'd ya reload the bucked rounds into another dump truck? No matter how small it is, if you get handlin' your wood too much, it really slows down production... :msp_tongue: Here's this morning's more conventional Tonka Tough load. Mostly...

Wow, Steve. Who needs sandbags when ya got traction like that in the winter? Nice loads, guys.

How do you get 1.5 cords into a half-ton pickup... (pics)

Well said, Doc. I agree 100% I would never think of representing these loads as anything resembling firewood (except maybe for my own bonfires) I simply thought some folks would get a kick out of the size, what with all the "what is a cord really" threads on here. :deadhorse:It might as well...

How do you get 1.5 cords into a half-ton pickup... (pics)

Yeah, I'm not even in the ballpark by weight:jester: But remember, that first load as seen in profile is actually squared cants stacked tight. Almost no airspace... volume is as volume does. Just happens to weigh far lass than an equivalent amount of healthy hardwood because it's 3 years...

Day-umm! That's a right pile of honest firewood, there  Nice Dodge, too!

How do you get 1.5 cords into a half-ton pickup... (pics)

Thanks for the table, Doc. Nice to see real-world weight stats. Most of this stuff wasn't exactly a popcorn fart by weight, but it's definitely half-rotten, and pretty light. Here's a similar weight, slightly less volumed load for today: I'm starting to get into some cedar that's...

How do you get 1.5 cords into a half-ton pickup... (pics)

I'm cleaning up some 3-year old cants that were left out in the woods on a farm where I do trail maintenance. Here's a bunch of mostly pine cants, but that's still 12 feet by 5.5' by 3' = 198cf. :msp_w00t: Well, less the wheel-wells, anyway... But there's almost no airspace, since they're all...

What kind of tree is this potential firewood from?

Could be some pignut hickory. It looks like there's at least one round in there from another tree, too. Should burn good!

    X27 technique???

I put the plastic sheath thingy on my fiskars and hang it up when I'm done. 8lb go-devil just gets left in a log. :jester:

We should all stack our firewood this way . . .

Yes and no. Cylindrical stacking techniques actually seem to work best with shorter pieces that are tapered: large end faces out. It is very difficult and time consuming to attempt to stack long pieces radially without having them push one another too far part at the outer surface of the pile...

Stihl vs Husky? If you dare!

262xp v. 038 mag. For 4.8 hp saws, the ludicrous weightlessness of the 262 is an interesting balance against the torquey power-band of the mag. Very different, both great IMHO.

We should all stack our firewood this way . . .

Yep. They fall everywhere. 360. Looks like a bomb went off. Now I'll occasionally still stack in the round, but much shorter, and with an inward taper. Got the little 'uns to watch out for!

    Tree ID

Looks a bit like ailanthus- ghetto palm/tree of heaven. Did it have leaves kinda like sumac?

Bar size for 038AV in Big Oak and Hickory?

I run 20 and 25 inch bars on my 038 mag. IMHO the saw feels to be balanced best with the 2 footer, but it pulls the 20 noticeably better buried in hardwood. I like 25" with full skip chain the best.

    Mother of all log splitters!!!

I don't know about the fittings. This guy was a rock blaster/stone-quarry man most of his life, so he has connections with lots of good heavy hydraulic equipment guys. He did mention that it used to run up to 3000 psi, but he backed it off to about half that. That cross cut in the pic hit 1,400...

    Mother of all log splitters!!!

Might not be the fastest, but seriously, though: this thing's huge. My neighborhood WoodGuru brought his home-made log splitter by today to help show me just how it's done. This thing splits like a maniac! For reference, the I beam is 1.5 inch steel, and 15" x 15" in cross section. The...

    Black Friday 2012

    Wood and Coal

Holy crap, an Olix Airflo! Nice stove! I've never seen another one besides my own, which is a slightly smaller model I bought used. No ash drawer, and no glass, but it heats like a mother, especially if you have the blower on the back of those exchange tubes! How do you like yours? :cheers...

Another "Would you make this trade" thread

Sounds like about $450-500 for a used 066... right around the going rate if it's in excellent shape, I'd think...?

    Wood ID please?

You betcha- Ulster County. The thornless honey locust idea seems plausible, but I think I'm a bit north of their usual range. I should have some black cherry kicking around the woodpile- I'll see if I can drag a piece out for a side by side comparison, but I think the black cherry bark is...
