    Stihl Pronunciation

I've got to ask as I just heard it on the radio again and it is driving me (more) nuts. Question: Do you pronounce Stihl as "Still" or as "Steel"? I have worked in logging in Ontario and British Columbia and toured other regions. In all my travels over the years, I have never heard a...

    which saw to buy????

When I cut a load of fuelwood logs, I pass over the 026 and 036 in favour of the 066 with just a 20" bar. Don't forget that the 066 will outcut the peanut saws 2:1, so I can get more work done in less time - more time to seek refreshments afterwards.

    Logging Books

To appreciate modern logging, first start by looking at some of the books and videos about old logging. I've got a lot of respect for those that worked in the woods years ago. On the modern side, I saw a book by Timberjack that chronicled the development of mechanical logging. The name and...

    Back to climbing, for now....

Hey Brian - I came to this post first when I signed on - first time in a long time. Congrats - glad to see you are back in the saddle. I know I don't have to tell you to be careful, so I'll tell you to make sure you are having fun! All the best.

Favorite Saw of All Time ?

Of all the saws I've had, the 026 is the best all around saw. The 028 cuts well, but the muffler design burns the hand, the 031 runs like a diesel - slow and all day long, the 036 is good, but a might hard to start for my father and others older, 044 is great, 038 was really good, 064 not bad...

    Fire damaged tree

Yes, my boy Jack says to let the tree leaf out, put on the spring wood and assess the extent of the damage on the basis of dead cambium in June. (I am typing this for him, because, at 28" tall, he has a little trouble with the keyboard/chair relationship :D)

    chipper/chip box combo

Makes good sense to me. My bucket truck had a built-in chipper and chip bin - freed up the pickup. As them to demo one for you.

    Save Your Maple!

Darin - congratulations to you and your wife! You two will have a blast. I guarantee you that your wife will go shopping quite frequently, and bring back all sorts of "cute" things that she will wash, fold, pile, refold and move about the room 3 or 4 times. The orders will be small at first...

    Save Your Maple!

Treeman - just hopped in here after a month of forestry and snow plowing. If you want an informed opinion about the value of logs or lumber cut from them, email me directly, or Darin can get ahold of me at work, and I will help you. I deal in this every day as one aspect of my profession...

    Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas everyone. I hope Santa treats everyone in the coming year with the same favours that my family has enjoyed in the last year. Have a safe and happy new year too. John, Heather, Jack and Flash

    Aerial lift / forrestry bodies?

Me thinks my bucket and body were 1971 vintage on a 1981 International Farm-All. It was an Asplundh L-45 with a built-in hydraulic drum chipper and dumping chip body with lots of storage for oily saws and long-handled tools. The truck was diesel, and the boom also ran off a pto. I had a winch...

    Riggng question

I've used that trick - works well when the wood isn't too brittle. Doesn't look all that professional to the customer, but as long as I was comfortable where the limb would go without a notch, then I used it.

    Customer Responsible?

My once-a-month post ... I used to joke with some of the better (more jovial) customers that my prices were as I quoted, regardless, but to look at the big saw and 36" bar, it was $10 admission. Also, several of the more jovial customers used to joke about paying with rubber cheques...

Should your municipality license tree work?

I see, as a professional forester, more of a need to control the uncontrolled cutting of private forest lands. Any harvest on private land should be done in a manner consistent with accepted silvicultural practices and according to a management plan prepared by someone in the field. It's a...

    Bush Revises Forest Rules

November 9th - I'm just peeved off enough to post tonight. The American Lumber Producers lobby, whose aim it is to pinch off supplies of affordable lumber to Americans and force prices up the demand curve as much as possible, have (temporarily) succeeded in imposing a 32% import duty on our...

    will beat any written estimate

Hi Guys!! Long-time-no-visit. Darin sent me an email and sparked me abit. I'm am typing one handed as I hold my 19 lb chuck of a son in my lap. I ususally told people that I'm not the cheapest, and I'll tell you the reasons. 10 minutes of PR and I could smooze 80 percent of them. The...

    064-what bar is best.

I have both the 064 and 066. I have 30 and 36" bars, and me thinks they are semi skip. I rarely use those bars (they have dust on them) and the saws normally run 20" bars with full chisel chain. At this point in my tree cutting career, I don't think I will be cutting trees beyond the limit of...

    Beetles in Canadian Pine trees

Hey Brian - 517 posts - you've been busy here. When I was logging in BC, I had an aggressive seek and destroy program running for the MPB, 5 years ago at the beginning of the current cycle. We flew in by helicopter, cut and burned the individual trees in an attempt to isolate the spread of the...

    oak lumber

A board foot, as I'm sure you know, is 12"x12"x1" thick. Your local mills will be able to point you to where you can purchase a scale stick calibrated to your local log rule ( or give you a legible used one if you chat them up). The stick basically accounts for length, diameter and cull...
