    Log splitter control valve question.

I am looking for a log splitter control valve that will retract on it's on with no action required except to let go of the handle. In other words I want to move the handle to extend the cylinder, but if I let go of the handle the cylinder automatically retracts. Does anyone have any...

Mounting a hydraulic cylinder like Power Split does.

I didn't know you could convert cylinders like that. So I can buy the cylinder I want and convert it?

Mounting a hydraulic cylinder like Power Split does.

I recently scrounged a gigantic square tube. It is 8x12 and 3/8ths thick. I have decided to make an upright vertical splitter with a table about 30-36 inches tall. The beam is so big, that I want to keep it as short as possible. I don't want it tipping over on me. I would like to mount my...

How do I dry and prepare a round to make a table

I cut a huge red oak a couple of weeks ago and kept several rounds including the 60 inch butt cut. I would like to make some tables out of these rounds. What is the best way to dry and prepare the rounds for milling. As far as milling goes I plan to get the rounds close with a chainsaw and...

Want a new saw, 24 inch bar

When it rains it pours, chainsaws that is. I ordered the husqvarna 555 this morning and traded a dump trailer load of wood for a Stihl 044 this afternoon. I also traded for a husqvarna climbing saw a few days ago. I don't remember what size the climbing saw is. Not that I would ever climb, but...

Want a new saw, 24 inch bar

The saw has a 20 inch bar on it, but I will need a 24 occasionally. This big oak I am going to cut for firewood is even larger than I thought. I had initially Sid it was a 4 foot tree, but it's larger than that. The trunk looks to be hollow, so I think I can still handle it with a 24 inch bar...

Want a new saw, 24 inch bar

I just bought a Husqvarna 555 Autotune off EBay. It comes with an 18 inch bar. I hope it will run a 24 inch bar ok. I have owned several Stihls but only one Husky. I don't know much about them. I bought this husqvarna 555 based on a couple of threads on this forum. Any advice and feed back would...

Want a new saw, 24 inch bar

I'm not against used. I just had not given used any thought when I started this thread. I saw a really nice 044 at a pawn shop last year. I should have bought it, but didn't need one then.

I would like to keep the price under $600 if I can.

Want a new saw, 24 inch bar

I'll measure the tree in a day or two. The homeowner is paying someone to cut it down, but I'm cutting it up for firewood. Cutting it up isn't an issue other than I need a new big saw. I cut up a tree about that size two years ago with a borrowed Stihl 362 I think. It had a 24 inch bar and just...

Want a new saw, 24 inch bar

I'm going to buy a new saw this year. Either a Stihl or Dolmar, both have dealers close. I will buy a couple different bars. I think a 18 for general work, but I have a large oak to cut. The oak is probably close to 4 foot across, so I will buy a 24 inch bar also. What would be my best bet for a...

Unusual ( stupid) stuff that youv've burned

When I was a firefighter, we responded to a report of a house fire. When we got close we saw tons of black smoke coming from the house. When we pulled up we realized all that smoke was coming from the chimney. The drunken rednecks had put a tire in the wood stove. It was completely out of...

Another stupid heating thought running through my head

I ran a garden hose through a compost pile here last fall. It was just a quick informal experiment. The compost pile was just leaves and grass clippings, probably 15-20 yards or so. It surprisingly heated the water to 120 degrees or so for a week, but lost all its heat as soon as it rained. I...

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/sNZ48h9_Z50?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> how about something like this? simply make that arm longer, so it could sit down over a stick of wood.

Portable inverted splitter? And electric conversion

I saw a hand portable hydraulic wood shear somewhere on youtube. It wasn't in english, I don't recall where it was. It was similar to the hydraulic shears on a fire truck "jaws of life", but has a wider reach. It was no where near big enough to reach from one cut end to the other. It was used by...

    Fireproof gloves

Go to Galls.com and look at structural firefighting gloves. They range from $20 to way to expensive. That's what I use. I've had mine for years. I picked them up for free from a firefighting equipment dealer who was trying to sell my department something.

    Weird weather

Its 60 something degrees out today. We have not had a winter to speak of in at least 5 years. I have not used a half cord of wood this year. I want to buy a splitter, but if it doesn't get colder my 6 cords I already have split could last me 20 years.

It's been a month since I had chestpain, great woodcutting day today.

I have a left bundle branch block. I think the shortness of breath is caused by my left ventricle beating out of rhythem. The cardiologist doesn't believe me when I tell him I'm short of breath. My 02 saturation is not low, but I still have that feeling of working harder to breath. I am having...
