    2024 garden season

Started my first seeds indoors tye last week of February. We've had very little snow and above normal Temps all winter. On Monday we hit 68⁰ and the soil in the raised bed was in decent shape so I put some seeds in the ground. I think it's the earliest I've ever planted seeds outside.

    2024 garden season

Is anyone else getting the itch to put some seeds in the ground?? If the forecast holds I just might be able to direct seed some stuff in the next 2 weeks. We have no snow cover here and the 14 day looks pretty warm. I'm just worried that it's still early but the conditions look good. On...

    2024 garden season

Yep, gotta do that myself. May have to look at my seed starting setup too. It was getting tight for space last year and this spring I want to try starting brussels sprouts too. Hoping to make some big changes in the garden this year. Last year was a year of construction, this year is going...

    2023 garden season

Well it looks like my 2023 garden is finally done. We had been abnormally warm for all of December but we finally got cold enough the last couple days where I think the kale is now dead. That's a record for us here.

Is your greenhouse heated? I've had an itch lately to setup a greenhouse but like sonny580 I live in a windy area so I don't think a plastic one would hold up very well so I would need something more durable.

I've never known anyone to transplant peas before. I'm assuming it's because of your climate?

    2023 garden season

Well it's that time of year here when we put the garden to bed. We had our first frost, -2⁰ this week, and they are calling for snow next week so I took advantage of a rare sunny day and got the garden ready for next year. Garlic planted and covered with straw. I got everything tilled up...

    2023 garden season

I give the area a light coating of 16-16-16 first. I don't want very much nitrogen or you get too much top growth but I want more available nitrogen that what you get in a straight P&K blend. Plus the 16-16-16 has some slow release N. And then I give the area a good coating of 6-24-24

    2023 garden season

I don't think it's an issue of your soil being too hard, I think it's more to do with adequate moisture and fertility. Big potatoes take a lot of nutrients and water. The area where I plant potatoes is quite heavy. Heavy enough that I thought I was going to snap my pitchfork handle this fall...

    2023 garden season

Man, I wish I could share some of the rain we have had over the last 2 months with some of you guys. We were constantly wet here in July/August so it's really taken a toll on things. I plant all blight resistant tomatoes and yet the blight absolutely devastated them this year. I didn't even get...

    2023 garden season

Good advice here. Taters need lots of fertilizer and water. But don't go too heavy with the N fertilizer or you will get very bushy plants. I mulch mine as well with straw, keeps the weeds down, moisture in the soil, and helps prevent taters from getting sunburnt.

    2023 garden season

I finally took some pics of the garden after I have it a good weeding. Things here don't look near as good as some of the other gardens posted on here. We were very dry earlier which made it a real struggle to get things to come up. I think the sweet corn took it the hardest. Now we have been...

When you say that you only get gold ball sized potatoes, is that golf ball sized taters on a big bushy plant or on a small sickly looking plant?

If you guys are into canning, give peach butter a try. I like it a lot more than peach jam. It has more peach flavour and less of a sugary feel.

    2023 garden season

Well it looks like my frost protection and watering efforts paid off. The strawberries this year were some of our best yielding yet! This was what we picked in one night at their peak, an entire flat's worth off of a 4x40' patch. And we've actually had some rain in the past week so...

    2023 garden season

It's peppers for me. Don't know what it is but it's very difficult to grow peppers here on the new property. Is anyone else dealing with a lot of predation problems this year? I don't know why this year is so bad, we've never had near this much damage before, but they are going after...

    2023 garden season

Good news, I saved the strawberry crop! Currently picking 1x 8 cup container every day, except for last night which was 1.5 containers. We really need rain though, very dry here. We've only had 1.7" of rain in two rainy days over 2 months.

    2023 garden season

I'm very jealous right now of you guys with your lush green gardens. It's really dry here. We only had 0.6" of rain in the last 5 weeks and this is day 7 of 85+ degree heat. Things looked OK here until the last few days, then they starting going downhill fast, including my strawberry patch. I...

    2023 garden season

Here's some pics of the base of the apple tree. I'll have to look into the variety more. Sounds like it's not cortland, no other trees around. And it's not Macintosh. This is the largest trunk. I think about 24" diameter. The rot I'm most concerned about is that hole in the trunk on the...
