    Recommendation for a tach ?

    Stihl BG85/SH85 max RPM

So i'm pretty good messing with single cylinder 4 strokes engines and carburetors, but 2 strokes with their diaphragm carburetors makes me pause. This problem has developed over the past few years and now that it is leaf blown season, it is getting annoying. My Stihl BG85/SH85 will not hold...

    Grrrr ... RANT !

So I was doing some maintenance on my Stihl SH 85 blower/ca and I noticed I was missing a screw. One of the fine thread ones that attaches the rewind assembly to the engine. I figured, I'm ordering parts, I'll just buy another screw, it under $2. the replacement was bare steel instead of black...

    Crank Seal

OEM. $8 I'll probably go longer than 2 years. The quick check is to pull the starter rewind assembly (3 screws). If there is a lot of oily dirt, it is time for a new seal.

Crank seal causing fuel leak ?

I will concur about flooding ! In warm weather, more than 3 or 4 pulls with the choke on and it is flooded ! My starting procedure is 1 or 2 pulls with full choke. Choke off, 1 or 2 more pulls. Like most 2 strokes, it doesn't like to take throttle until it has idled for 30-60 seconds.

    Crank Seal

I have to install a new rubber hand grip before reassembly. That took twice as long as installing the seal ! The seal went in no problem using a socket, but the washer trick would have done a better job of getting it to bottom out evenly. I did not need the electrical tape as I used Fluid...

    Crank Seal

I will have to remember those tricks !

    Crank Seal

Not a smoker, but if I get in this situation again I might have to start ! An tips to installing the seal ? I plan on using a socket as a seal driver and will lube the crankshaft first. Do I need any RTV on the out side of the seal ?

    Cleaning fluid and procedures

Most of my small engine experience has been with B&S 4 stroke engine. Incredibly simple and easy to work on. Most single cylinder B&S engine, either vertical or horizontal shaft, have very few 'housing"/shrouds/cover piece and. because of the nature of the beast, heavy oil caked external...

Crank seal causing fuel leak ?

Those "imitation" carburetors are only $10-$15 on eBay ! The parts diagram I am looking lists a couple of different carburetors. How can I tell which one I have ? Also, no rebuild kit is shown.

Crank seal causing fuel leak ?

A "friend" who owed me a favor was going to get this piece of equipment fixed for me. I did not believe the "not worth fixing" so I am doing it myself. Removing the rewind cover, it was obvious that the crank seal was not in great condition ! Lot and lots of oil and dirt build up. Popped the...

    Crank Seal

The definitive test for a crank seal is a pressure/vacuum test. This is a pain, because you need block off plates for both the intake (carburetor) and the exhaust (muffler) and a pressure/vacuum source. Short of "visual inspection" ("Hmmm, there is a lot of oil and dirt build up that looks...

Starting procedure after sitting for 5 or 10 minutes on Stihl BG86 blower

I have the previous generation blower, BG85C. I have found out the hard way, that this engine is very EASY TO FLOOD and VERY DIFFICULT to CLEAR THE FLOOD ! Cold start : Couple of primer bulb pumps, full choke, 1 or 2 pulls - NO MORE ! Choke off, usually starts the next pull. Hot start : No...

Crank seal causing fuel leak ?

I have a Stihl BG85, which is probably 15 years old. It starts easy and runs well. For the past year or so, any fuel in the tank when I shut it down leaks out between uses (typically a week). Not immediately, but over a few days. It show now leak if I out it down for 30 minutes and then...

    Human

He is covered. In one of his follow up videos, the orthopedic surgeon said he would recover, probably "fully", but he should expect future "health issues" in his life.

I don't know if this has been posted here or not ... There is a arborist on YouTube with a channel name of Human. He took a very bad fall a couple of months ago. Long recovery ahead.

Muffler on a 2-stroke Stihl Blower

Can't be safety wired. The Torx screw is at the bottom of a deep well in the muffler.

Muffler on a 2-stroke Stihl Blower

Loctite is only good to 300F. I would think that the cylinder gets hotter than that. Worth a try !

Muffler on a 2-stroke Stihl Blower

I have a several year old Stihl handheld 2 stroke blower that still runs great ! However, the muffler screws (Torx, socket head) come lose about every second or third time I use it. Yes, it only take a minute to tighten them but I don't want to strip/wear out the threads in the cylinder...

    Stihl SH85 no start

WOW ! Quick and easy solution !! I also re-set the low and high speed screws. Looks like I will have to disassemble the housing to adjust the idle screw (stalls at idle). Time for a new filter ? The Stihl filter is 2 layers, a typical foam pre-filter and a much heavier/stiffer (more...
