    Lombardi Pine and Lombardi Poplars

Lombardy poplars grow quite readily from large cuttings. Put a branch up to 2" diameter firmly into the ground in autumn/winter, and keep moist for a year, it should form roots. They grow so fast, that within a few years, it will have outgrown the majority of nursery grown stock available to...

    oak trees

I would have thought a sandy loam would drain well enough for an oak?

    Riggng question

Tom, could you please email me some rigging links, as a fairly new climber I`ve just started to get into rigging techniques quite recently and would love to learn more. Cheers.

    Riggng question

In london, we work in a lot of small gardens over sheds and conservertories almost every day, and i find the peel cut quite handy, frequently. I like to cut most of the way through, put my saw away, get my handsaw out and finish the cut with my free hand helping to quide the branch.

smashed bed plates on vermeer 625II chipper

Cheers JPS and TC165, I didn`t think that the alloy rake handle could do that alone. A few days before the bed plate broke, somebody had replaced the bedplate, tightened it up and then gave it a good spray of WD40. I thought that the WD40 might have helped loosen the bedplate while the chipper...

smashed bed plates on vermeer 625II chipper

Does anyone out ther know, if it would be possible to split a bed plate by shooting about 2" of alluminium tube from the handle of a rake, the chipper worked for around two hours after the rake, and then the bed plate broke. What do you think.

    Cuts

When I started using handsaws I found it all too easy to cut myself, maybe they dont seem too dangerous without a 2- stroke engine, but they certainly cut the flesh very effectively.

    Pruning a chinese elm

30-40 ft does not appear too elderly for chinese elms, so removing limbs extending over a property shouldnt harm the trees too much. But pruning trees over building adds more hazards to bear in mind, for your property and yourself its always better to get an arborist in.

    Dogwoods

Over here we try to prune our dogwoods in Spring, as a lot of dogwoods have attractive coloured stems for winter colours.

    sick maple trees

It sounds like it could quite possibly be a drought problem, and if so, theres not much you can do but maybe mulch around the base of the trees to conserve moisture, and hope next year is a better one. If not drought, more investigation is probably required.

    Mulch

Using `green chips` apparently draws nitrogen from the soil as the chips break down, but you only have to leave the chips for about six weeks, and then it is fine to use, or so I`ve been told.

    cupressocyparis

I agree with treeclimber 165 on this one, in england we have to deal with a lot of unruly leylandii hedges and trees that have outgrown their small urban gardens, and a lot of the work is the dreaded top job, as clients would rather reduce them than replace them. They are the only tree that...

    The Basics

All I use most days as my basic kit is harness, lifeline, 30m 16 braid, adjustible lanyard,3m, 4 biners, with a blakes hitch/split tail on my main lifeline, and a short prussik loop on my lanyard. As far as premade prussik, I don`t see the point, when you can buy nice 8-10mm prussik line and tie...

white birch is turning yellow and leaves are falling.

its quite possible that the trees, only being seven years old, may well just be lacking nutrients or mycorrihzae, and its also possible to over water a stressed tree, I would try fertilizing the tree in autumn and maybe get someone to look at them to seel if their is a deeper problem. Hope this...

    topping trees good?

We do a lot of crown shaping in the UK on street trees and in gardens, as a big problem here is people and councils always planting trees that eventually outgrow their intended space. Not the nicest of jobs, as the trees never look the same again, but at least its not topping, and if you take...

    Id problem no. 2

"Fraxinus excelsior suffers from a condition, not fully explained, called ash dieback. It has not been clearly characterized but involves the death of scattered twigs, branches or limbs. Even severly affected trees sometimes recover. It is common in hedgerows, particularly those adjacent to...

    Buying a saddle

I agree with the X man about floating dees, they really do make climbing out on the ends of branches a nicer and sometimes easier experience. I personally use the komet butterfly as my main harness, as i like the lightweight stlye and the ease of taking it on and off, and the floating dee strap...

    dead poplar stem

Thanks for the replys all, it certinately helps to hear other opinions on jobs such as these. I asked one of the other climbers today, whether he would have done it, and he said he probably wouldnt try either. We might throw a pull rope into the tree, but its leaning quite heavily towards a...
