Winter Tree Harvesting Trick....yay or nay?

Green wood splits easier if you do it on cold days, depending on the type of wood it is this makes a big difference. Some wood splits much easier then others.

    Dead Elm ?

American elm? It sounds like it was infected with Dutch elm. Getting it out of there sooner is better, chip it up/burn it and kill the bugs under the bark before they spread to a different tree. As for it coming down on its own, it will probably do so over the course of many years, usually in...

Band saw mill vs swing blade mill

We are starting small. 2 guys and a band saw mill. We will not be focusing on any sort of wood. I'm trying to get him to invest more into equipment. I feel we are going to need trailers, trucks and a skid steer with a grapple. He says he can secure the capital. I can't see renting equipment on...

Overgrown, clashing trees in small patio

Well I don't know much about palms but my guess it whats leaning is leaning, new growth could be turned vertical if it is the best path for the tree to grow into the light. Removing one of the trees is an option, sure.

Overgrown, clashing trees in small patio

Trimming would likely be an effective solution. I would also consider modifications to the fence to allow room for the tree. I would recommend calling a couple different arborists for consultations and bids. The neighbors tree seems to be the worst offender. Check local law, in Minnesota you...

    Pruning a Silver Maple

The absolute best time to trim any tree is just before they come out of dormancy. They do most of their growing and therefore healing, in the spring. Your maple tree isn't really susceptible to any pest born ailments which is the primary reason for trimming at certain times of the year. It is...

Need advice on Rope for Tree Removal

Branches intertwined with adjacent trees is a pretty significant obstacle... I can't really advise you with any real authority without actually seeing the job. I hope you're looking at the whole picture and recognize not only what is likely to happen but what could happen. Pulling a tree...

Need advice on Rope for Tree Removal

As for what kind of knot to use, make sure where you tie it to the tractor the rope won't be cut by the steel. That being said I like a figure 8 knot. If it isn't dressed perfectly it won't come out...

Need advice on Rope for Tree Removal

I don't know that I would agree with using a cheap rope. Pulling trees with machinery the last thing you want is to break the rope and its not that hard to do. Pulling with equipment is not something I would do alone. There are several variables as to if I would do it and exactly how I would...

Which would you rather have for a big saw?

    I have run a 660, 880, 395xp and a 3120xp in a tree, the only one I found "unwieldy" was the 88.

    Oregon Ash + pruning questions

Ideally you're going to want to cut only the damaged parts of the tree. Let the tree recover from that shock and come back a couple years later and shape them more to your liking. This will minimize the shock to the tree. You want to avoid "topping" the tree. It's possible the top can be...

    Tristaniopsis laurina

Pictures? Is the lean result of wind or has it always leaned? How quickly is the lifting getting worse?

Which would you rather have for a big saw?

I'm partial to the 3120, I think it's a little more torquey and balanced better, plus I like the external oiler for that extra shot when pulling big bars.

    Gloves.. Any good ones exist?

Cheap gloves, you burn trough them quick. Snowmobiling gloves are toasty but spendy and don't really hold up to wear of handling wood.

    cord wood saw,whats the best

I like the Husqvarna 550xp for a 50cc saw, you have essentially the same saw with the 346xp. Next size up the only saw I think is worth its salt is the Stihl 460, I'm hearing the 461 is good, I can't say, I haven't run it. Echo however has an extremely good warranty, I run them for my top...
