Flat plate heat exchanger domestic water

I have a 10 plate on the cold water inlet with the OWB loop in series with the sidearm. Think about it - the plate exchanger on the inlet heats the water on its way into the tank and the sidearm keeps it hot when the hot water is not in use. Mixing valve is a must.

Old Red Oak Hasn't Shed Leaves - Is it Dead?

Thanks for the reassurance. This tree shades the house and I really don't want to lose it. I'll be patient, wait until spring and happily rake the leaves then.

Old Red Oak Hasn't Shed Leaves - Is it Dead?

Yeah, I know that the pin oaks and the water oaks that I was familiar with down at the coast do, but this is the only red oak around here that is doing this..

Old Red Oak Hasn't Shed Leaves - Is it Dead?

I live in Virginia, in the mountains, we are well into winter weather. I have an older Red Oak on the property (20"DBH) that has not shed its leaves, all the others have. The leaves are brown and dead, just like the leaves on the ground, but they are hanging on to the tree, even in rain...

Poulan 306A - Broken Rings - Scored Lower Cylinder

Here is a Picture - the scratch is not as bad as the pix looks, most of what you see is some plating loss. I've never looked into the cylinder of a reed valve engine. The ports are way different than my stihls. How does it work differently?

Poulan 306A - Broken Rings - Scored Lower Cylinder

My beloved 306A recently busted its rings after 40 years of faithful service. The piston is OK, I have two replacement rings, but the cylinder has a small groove scored in the area below the exhaust port. This is a reed valve engine. With all the other porting and openings in this area of the...

Installing Ranco aqua stat on Natures Comfort Boiler

I have one and you can adjust the set point (up to 220) and the differential (1 - 30 degrees). I use a lower set point (170) in the shoulder seasons to keep the water from getting close to boiling on the warm afternoons with a 6 degree differential so that it will burn longer when it does come...

    Scrounging Firewood (and other stuff)

Something that has worked real well for me is that I went out and added a really big saw to my stash - Its a Stihl 084 with a 36 inch bar. People that I know and work with cut wood, and most of them don't have anything that big. When they get an opportunity to cut down something big, they will...

    Cutting in the snow

This may seem like a stupid question, but for the last few days we've had about 2 feet of snow around here (Virginia) and I've been cutting some deadwood behind the house. When bucking the felled wood, the bar ends up in the snow. Is this a good? bad? indifferent? thing? As long as the bar...

My bench was to clean so I put a 064 on it

064 parts - Stihl Supported? I'm missing an 80 cc saw in my 5 saw plan and have often thought that an 064 would be a good fit. My big saw is an 084 and I love it and I baby it - because when I am running It ,always in the back of my mind, is the thought, "Am I going to break something that I...

    Olier cable for 084AV rebuild

Pad I'm no expert in this by any means, but............. I bought my 084 well used, and before I ran it, I had to tear it down to fix a few things. I remember that when I had the oil pump out, I attached the cable to it and tried to operate the "maximizer". It is VERY stiff in...

    waste of a good chainsaw?

When i was a kid in the 60's we all made/built/bought go karts. None were fancy and all were sort of cobbled together with whatever we could scrounge. Mine was made of the parts from my old soap box derby car with a Briggs 2.5 HP horizontal shaft moter off of an old reel-type lawnmower that a...

    Poulan 306A Muffler questions

Are you sure you have #12 bolts in them? That IS the proper size for them. Seen more then one with #10's in them that someone put in them. The245 never came with the cast muffler and if the original bolts were used from the tin muffler they will be too short. As for the 306, I'm...

    Poulan 306A Muffler questions

I don't want to hijack the thread, but since we are talking about 306/245 mufflers....... Ihave one of each, both are the cast, one bolt type and I can't for the life of me find a way to keep the bolts from backing out after a tank of gas or so. Tried red locktite tried a lock washer on a...

    RR tie cut offs

Used to be able to get them here at the Salem, Va. plant, but they wised up and converted their treatment plant boiler from natural gas to a big wood burning boiler. Now they burn them all themselves. Oh well!!!

Help - What Model is my Stihl 084?

Bought an old 084 last year. It is frightfully powerful and wonderful, and I have enjoyed running and servicing this awesome beast of a machine. I have had the opportunity to do some work on it. When I look through the Illustrated Parts List, I see notes referring to models: 084, 084R...

noodleing... with or without clutch cover.

I was noodleing some big pieces of dry oak once with my old Poulan 245. It has a rear-facing jug, and so, of course the muffler is just behind the clutch cover and it gets pretty hot back there. I smelled something burning, and looked down to see that my saw was on fire from the built up...

What size/brand bar should I run on a Stihl 034 AV Super?

034 seems happy with 20" bar - also is roller nose the best????? I run a Stihl roller nose 20" full comp 3/8 .050 Chis. on my 034 and it seem real happy with it. I don't usually use it fully in the wood, as I have larger saws for bigger rounds. I don't think that it would do real well with...

Large Rounds / Too Heavy to move

Two round fill up the truck!! Here is the 60" DBH White Oak that I'm working on now. Back at the house I have a 27 HP compact tractor that has a 3pt hitch mounted lifting arm with a log grapple that I use to position the quarters on the vertical log splitter. I use a cordless drill and screw...
