Husqvarna 550 MKII Overview & First Impression

As long as my personal accountant gets on board. Soon. Really soon.

    Barber Chair question

Or could you also say? As we move our back cut above the apex of our notch, are we just effectively making our hinge wider and putting ourselves in a better position to trigger our beloved Barber Chair? Please feel free to straighten out my take on this. I cut 95% dead pines, a few dead...

Which bar mounted filing guide should I get?

4 years ago I bought a Granberg. Good piece of equipment. I have had good consistent results with it. About 14 months ago I bought a Husky roller guide to use on my Sthil MS-270. I wanted to try it. Figured I'd have to file the guide to get it to fit. Nope, it fit right onto my stock Sthil...

    New Stihl MS271.

In 2011 I got my MS-270. Except for the sidewinder replacement for a traditional two nut side plate, I love the thing. Even better was the time I spent learning "How To". At this point I only run Anti-kickback chains, for added safety. Since my GOL instructors were advocating the same, I'll...

How would you bring down this tree?

I'd wrap a chain around that vertical stem about the height of the orange tape in the middle photo, before I did anything. Even before I cut up the tree on the ground.

    Advice on sharpening Stihl Ms291

Glad you got it figured out. Frustrating I'm sure. I've a 26 RM3 67 on my Stihl MS-270 and for almost a year have been sharpening it with Husky's Roller guide (that fit right into place). Part #505 69 81-09, 0.325", H22, H25, 4.8mm file. The #9137 may show up as well. I just use my normal...

    Barber Chair question

Plunging skillfully is not rocket science. It's a good idea to get instruction and will need practice to become skilled at it, especially when using it to avoid triggering a barber chair on forward leaners. Think of a 30 - 36" stump with about 80 - 100 plunges into it, to really develop the...

    Low kickback vs. regular chain

I have to disagree Philbert. My anti-kickback chains are perfect for bore-cutting. It's the way that one yellow linked chain I own, likes to jump during the plunge that has relegated it to the bottom of my box of supplies. My green linked anti-kickback chains bore cut like a dream. Easy to...

    Hinge Width on Heavy Leaner

Should I find myself with a large leaner like this I'll go with a near normal sized hinge. I did not think about a larger hinge actually causing a barber chair, but that makes sense. And Woody I like the 1 foot out the door. :D

    Hinge Width on Heavy Leaner

Good call. No desire to go back to re-work the hinge.

    Hinge Width on Heavy Leaner

I had a Yorkie named Crissy. Best friend I've had. She probably wouldn't be much help either.

    Hinge Width on Heavy Leaner

I do something similar on smaller leaners, myself. It's just the size and weight difference on a 30" heavy leaner that drives my question on the hinge width. More research... Thanks for the reply fella's. :D

    Hinge Width on Heavy Leaner

Glad you got that one to the ground safely. Thanks for the photo's and sharing your experience. Something about the urgency of knowing when to move quickly. Whats your 4 legged helpers name?

Read this if you are new to cutting trees down (or are just bored)

Damn glad your still with us, sir. I second the guy about the training class. Last year I went to one of GOL's classes and it was a huge affirmation for what I had learned online and from books. Great class and good crowd of men & women learning to be better tree fallers. Thank you for your...

Advice on approach to removing hung tree

This ought to be drawn out on paper, with tension, compression and standing positions for cutting. Then photographed and posted here. It'd be nice to see the reactive forces of bad choices too. Words only go so far...

    Hinge Width on Heavy Leaner

Hey guys & girls. I wanna ask about hinge size on heavy leaners. I have a 30 inch hardwood, (I don’t know the species) with 6 to 8 feet of lean in the 1st 18’ of tree. From there the tree straightens out to vertical with multiple stems for another 30 plus feet. The root plate has lifted 8”...

    Dangerous Tree Comes Down

I wish I had seen it for myself B4 the cutting started, for a good look see... I wonder if a shallow(er) notch may have allowed that wedge of wood to fall out like normal, creating a working hinge.

New Chain, file not fitting easily for sharpening

Hey guys, Recently purchased a new Stihl 26 RM3 chain for my MS-270. It's one of the green linked safety chains. My first sharpening on the new chain with a 3\16" file that was mounted on a Stihl file guide and the file was not fitting down into the tooth for sharpening. The file was...

How do I cut wind blown trees?

I love your open mindedness to the severity of your situation, and your willingness to ask for help. However I am concerned with "it kinda goes against my constitution". Your willingness to increase your knowledge base to meet this situation is honorable, but as others have mentioned and I...

Hack: Removing a chainsaw stuck in a tree

More available training would be nice, I''m off to my 1st 2 day'er in October. BUT, how many will actually attend. How many will actually look at their shiny new saw and admit they have no clue. The accidents I have seen over 25 years climbing (rocks) demanded that I do everything in my power...
