Little doo-hickey thingy for Stihl ==> Husky bar

Original part was all bent to he!!. Was able to straighten it in the bench vise. Wondering if I can heat it with a torch and quench it in oil to make it harder and less susceptible to bending?

Little doo-hickey thingy for Stihl ==> Husky bar

A couple years ago I took a file and elongated the slot in my Stihl chainsaw bar and with the use of a small insert adapter I could use the 36" Stihl bar on my 394 Husky. I can't remember what the part is called but I bought it from one of the site sponsors. I need a new one. If you are...

    Saw Value

Is a Husky 455 with less than 15 hours use worth $250?

    Bought a new hatchet

I'll have to find a bear to test it.

    Bought a new hatchet

Peeled off three paper stickers and used WD40 to remove the glue. Waxed it with Johnson's Paste Wax before I took it out into the elements. Very pleased with the tool.

    Bought a new hatchet

This thing is not for the timid. It demands you handle it with authority and man does it split. The Germans know how to make steel. https://www.amazon.com/Ochsenkopf-Hatchet-SPLIT-QUICK-handle-1250/dp/B0002YZJ0A/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1487449297&sr=8-6&keywords=ochsenkopf+hatchet

3 semi loads of oak, hickory all delivered.

Nice score, I would be doing some chainsaw milling making timbers out of the big boys.

What do I need for an insert

Check your local ordinances. You will need an inspection for homeowners insurance. We installed one last year. I'm glad I paid to get it done. Snaking the liner down the chimney took them 2.5 hours of the 3 hour install. If the liner is there you just need the appropriate adapter for the...

Proper chain (most efficient) for a STIHL MS 460 Magnum

Don't know how big the stuff is you're cutting but I run a 20" bar on mine most of the time with a full chisel chain. It's one cutting son-of-a-gun.

    Stump Burn

I cut down a large ornamental maple a couple of years ago and am finally getting to the stump. I tried using a 55 gallon drum open on both ends as a chimney and built a fire on top of the stump after soaking it with diesel fuel. Didn't work. I tried drilling holes in it, then soaking it again...

    A mini adventure

Second charcoal session today. At the advice of someone on another forum I went with less heat and a longer time. Lump charcoal came out in much larger pieces. These work much better on the grill.

    A mini adventure

Not so much the tornado effect if you are referring to cyclonic action. The cinder blocks made a super draft like a rocket stove and it burned really hot. It was not pleasant getting close to the barrel to load the wood with the intense heat. It was 37 degrees when I started with clear skies...

    A mini adventure

I notice the taste is different based on the kind of wood used to make the charcoal. Lump charcoal does not have any of the binder additives briquette charcoal has. The chimney helps a lot too. No lighter fluid.

I understand what you are saying but there is no such thing as a longer slower cook when doing this. You need all the heat you can get so I just kept feeding the fire as long as the burning gasses were coming out the top.

    A mini adventure

I have to burn the burn pile one way or the other. Results with the hard maple were good for the first attempt. I need to use smaller chunks of wood to get more uniform pieces. I have both ash and hickory to try too. My original thought was to use hickory but the maple was very convenient.

    A mini adventure

The beginning of a beautiful friendship. Ribs, potatoes in the foil, grilled Spanish onions and asparagus. I will try and post a YouTube link to a video showing the roaring action of the retort. It was quite impressive.

    A mini adventure

I put wood under the barrels and started a fire. The chimney action burned really, really hot, like 3 rocket stoves. It took about 3 hours to burn to the point where there were no more volatile organic compounds (VOCs) jetting out the top. It roared quite loudly for a long time and the fire...

    A mini adventure

So I bought a new charcoal grill from Pilot Rock. Lump charcoal at the local supply store is $27 for 20# of charcoal. Heck with that, I researched how to make charcoal and thought I'd give it a try. I picked up a 30 gallon steel drum for $28. It was somewhat difficult to find but it has a...

How far do you guys haul firewood

I'm fortunate I only have to haul on my own property boundary. I try to drag whole trunks to the processing area and leave the small branches in burn piles in the woods. Lots of hardwoods here In NY and after last night's storm I'm sure there will be wind damaged tress to harvest.
