    Poisoning buckthorn - mixing herbicide?

I don't know what the shelf life is for the mixture but I have used some that was a year old and it seemed fine. Incidentally, an agriculture chemical salesman once told me that most herbicides have about a 6 year shelf life in the original containers. FWIW

    Scrounging Firewood (and other stuff)

Thanks for sharing. That is kind of a bucket list thing for me. Believe it or not it is easy to find Siberian Huskies here but they have never seen a sled. You can imagine they are a bit uncomfortable in the summer. I did not know they had a reputation for a mild temperament.

Uh Huh. You're on to him also.

If you say so. Seriously, I kind of like to throw a little sassafras on the camp fire. That popping and jumping kind of keeps people awake and active.

A sober man would have just hopped up and let it fall on through. LOL. Don't ask me how I know that.

OK, compression wood. I have heard you recommend removing as much as possible a few times in the past. We can figure the compression wood going to the center of the stem.

Ouch. Most of my wood is white oak. Fortunately mother nature takes most of them down for me and for firewood white does not split as easily as red. Duly noted.

I can't say much for your employer that first week. His wife must have been the insurance investigator for the company. LOL. Your instincts and desire to learn a better way have kept you alive and healthy. I REALLY like that method for cutting leaners, better than a coos bay. You can better...

And once upon a time these guys had a mentor or three. Just too much at stake to plod ahead in the dark.

Bitzer is the real deal. I have followed his postings for a few years and will continue. Most of us have but a small tinkling of his experience and we do not have to constantly carry all of our tools and supplies everywhere we go. He replaces our extra junk with skill so for me I personally...

    Scrounging Firewood (and other stuff)

Thanks. That is real interesting. I have seen the Heinz 57 (mutts) qualities shine many times. Some breeds have been ruined by breeding for show. Irish Setters comes to mind. I do confess though that I thoroughly have enjoyed my so called pure bred Golden Retrievers.

    Axe recommendations please

That Helko is a fine looking axe. It appears to have an extra wide cutting face which would really shine in wood that was softer and green. Ash was commonly used for baseball bats, maybe still is. Even MLB power hitters have a hard time denting that ash except when they throw a temper tantrum...

    What tree type is this?

Sorry. The photo will not paste.

    What tree type is this?

For future reference look at the end grain. All oaks I know of have tan colored radius lines that go from the center to the bark, same as spokes on a bicycle wheel. Not many other trees have these lines.

It may sound silly and we all vary on how sentimental we are but don't you wish those axes could talk?

    Ain't it cute

Last week I sent 2 emails to the Stihl web site and they have forwarded my 150 problem to the largest Stihl US distributor (Bryan Equipment) for an answer. I am waiting for a reply. We'll see.

Judging by the partial sample shown of your axe collection, may I guess you are a fan of the double bit. I only have one double bit, a cheap no-name I bought about 25 years ago and I worked it to good edges. I must say for pure cutting it is better than my single bits of equal sharpness. Maybe...

    Axe recommendations please

I don't remember ever coming across a "straight vs curved" axe handle discussion here. I found an old True Temper Flint Edge (I think Kelly Works) about a year ago in good shape and hung a straight hickory handle in it but I have not even swung it yet, hanging on the wall. Any love here for the...

    Ain't it cute

I talked once to a guy on AS that was selling his 150 because he had already replaced it with a little Echo top handle. His main complaint with the 150 was the packing of saw dust under the highly restrictive clutch cover. It would pack so tight it would slow the chain. His new Echo did much...
