Looking for someone with a CS or bandmill (Southern OH / Northern KY)

The log loses between 1/4 and 1/3 over the length. I didn't have a tape measure with me and Her uncle wasnt home, so I would put the length at 8' but i know its quite a bit longer than that (better to sell it short than overestimate). Im guessing Eastern Hemlock? The log can wait for a while...

Looking for someone with a CS or bandmill (Southern OH / Northern KY)

I've got quite a nice log that my fiance's uncle gave me that I need cut. Unfortunately, my bandmill isn't finished, and I don't have the money to go buy a chainsaw mill just for this. I've also go some oak that needs cut, but for now, here is what I need cut up: If you live anywhere near...

Climber Crushed When Tree Splits Apart

I used Bing to pull up a birds-eye map to try and see what kind of trees were being cut. You can find that map here: http://binged.it/tphYYW Additionally, I've posted a screen-captured image here for discussion purposes:

Is This The Makings Of A Band Saw Mill?

I agree. If it's cheap enough, buy for your shop as a resaw or a general use bandsaw.

Is This The Makings Of A Band Saw Mill?

Extending the frame would be more trouble than it's worth, but you *might* be able to use the bandwheels. Most of the bandmill blades I've seen are 1.25" wide. In theory you could use smaller blades for a smaller mill (perhaps something capable of cutting "logs" 8" or so in diameter.

    Still slabbing

I would probably build a rolling shop bench with a machinist cabinet underneath, covered with a roll-top style front-piece. Can't wait to see some of the wood in a project.

Thinking of building a band mill, any suggestions as to design...

I've been slowly building a bandmill myself, and my advice to you is to be VERY resourceful. I've been picking through a scrapyard every week or so for about 2 months. The price of steel is still up quite a bit from where it was a few years ago when I last bought steel. So much so that I was...

    Local solution to stop cracking?

I second the notion that cracking adds character to cookie tables. It kinda detracts from some slabs, but it really adds something to others. As for the vac chamber, I've used one on a small scale for stabilizing pen and stock blanks with a friend a few years back. It worked pretty well. The key...

    Local solution to stop cracking?

I got this half-cookie on July 18th after watching a Stihl saw-off between Arden Cogar Jr. and Mike Sullivan. They had just shown how fast a Stihl can cut when compared against a competitors saw (Stihl vs Husq). Afterwards, they showed how one of the open-modified hot saws fared against the...

    Local solution to stop cracking?

The key is hydration and slow, uniform drying. If it dries too fast, the wood will start to crack. I've personally had pretty good results by using Anchor Seal on the cut ends and then keeping the wood itself hydrated with a mixture of mineral spirits and boiled linseed oil. Lately, I've been...

Promised closeups and mods to carriage mill

Be very careful. Jim Wilson was a good friend of mine, and now he's gone simply because of a lapse in judgement while dealing with galvanized metal. See: Zinc Metal Fume Fever : A Case Study : Blacksmithing How-to on anvilfire iForge

Got some big Red Oak today

I'm planning on building a timberframe out of red oak in the next few years. Nice pile you've got there. Can't wait to see it milled.
