    CS 490 Or CS 501P?

Stock, I agree. Muffler modded and broken in and I agree with Steve/Mountainlake

    CS 490 Or CS 501P?

If you don't spend at least 30 hours behind that saw every year, get the CS-490 and muffler mod it. You'll be fine.

I got the Makita 6401 upgrade itch.

Only three reasons not to: 1. cost (especially if the 6401 still runs strong) 2. fuel economy; she's a thirsty girl 3. you'll want AT LEAST a 24" bar to even START to take advantage of the extra power. Running a 20" bar you won't notice much of a difference.

    makita dsc6401

This is good advice. Occasionally my 6401/7901 conversion will be tough to restart (getting too much fuel). Sometimes it won't rev up until the rich condition clears.

    Ultrasonic questions

If you have a large enough unit you can use plain distilled water in the tank. I put the carb or other part to be cleaned in a small peanut butter jar. Then I fill the jar up to the 80-90% full level with plain gasoline and put the lid on snugly. Then I put the jar (which floats) into the...

    Big Stihl Saw price justification

Good answer SVK. It's a case of what it DOES, not what it IS. Every saw is nothing more than a collection of a few dollars worth of metal and a few cents worth of plastic. It's the ARRANGEMENT/SHAPE/FUNCTION of those materials that gives the thing its value.

    Makita dcs6401 rebuild questions

I upgraded my 6401 last year. I bought the kit from Chainsawr I believe. In any case, it was the 7901 kit, not the 7910. Decomp on the correct side and everything.

    Want to Sell 20 New Husqvarna Chains 36" 3/8" .058 115DL H48-115 $375 Shipped

36" chains would have a lot more than 84 drive links. 84DL is usually a 24" chain.

Any downside to running a chain with 3 teeth missing?

Franny, the poll was meant to be humorous, not legit. I didn't really expect many votes.

Any downside to running a chain with 3 teeth missing?

One of the customers I call on swears he can gum a steak better/faster than he can chew it with his dentures.

Any downside to running a chain with 3 teeth missing?

I'm using full-complement chain. As Steve pointed out above, is a missing tooth going to be any different than using skip or semi-skip? If you feel it is, please elaborate.

Any downside to running a chain with 3 teeth missing?

Gentlemen, I'm sure this is good advice but it's deeper down the rabbit hole than I'm interested in going. I don't cut but a half dozen cords a year and I don't save any worn or broken chains. I simply wanted to know if a few broken teeth were going to be a problem that I didn't foresee...

Any downside to running a chain with 3 teeth missing?

'Been cutting some logs/stumps into smaller pieces for burning in a neighbor's wood stove. The logs contain assorted nails, staples and other metallic tramp material and my chains seems to find them all. [I'm running 20LPX chain on the Husky 346XP.] On one chain I've had three teeth so...

Dolkita 64xx/73xx/79xx won't take 8-pin rim drive sprocket?

If I did that the entire chip deflector would be just as likely to tear out as to cut. I'm thinking it would take an entirely different (larger) sprocket cover for this to work.

Dolkita 64xx/73xx/79xx won't take 8-pin rim drive sprocket?

Since upgrading my 6401 to 7901 I wanted to try out an 8-pin sprocket to take advantage of some of that extra power. I bought the appropriate Oregon 22273 rim sprocket to give it a try. Everything fits just fine except that the chain now hits the rubber chip guide/deflector. Looking at the...

    Husqvarna 550XP? Don't waste your time...(video included)

I think the original post linked to a video where a fellow was pointing out the need to pressure/vacuum test before simply slapping on another cylinder/piston.

DCS-6401-->7901; observations on tuning, noodling and DPX chain

A couple of weeks ago I upgraded my ex-Home Depot DCS-6401 with a genuine OEM 7901 piston and cylinder courtesy of Chainsawr; installed a new metal base gasket, didn't bother measuring squish, didn't touch ports/timing/etc. Assembled just the way a 7901 would come from the factory. At the same...

Breaking In a New Echo CS-620PW Chain Saw

@kiteboarder It sounds like just a little more oil (3.2oz in a gallon of gasoline instead of 2.6), but it's really a 20% increase in the amount of oil. On a percentage basis it's a meaningful amount. Your saw will love you for it.
