Chipper blades, restoring w welding, advisable or not ?

We need to sharpen our chipper blades more often and repair the edges when they get gouged. Sharp blades make a huge difference. Has anyone had any success restoring deeply gouged chipper blades by filling in the low area with weld metal and re-grinding ? I imagine that these chipper blades...

used lumber w nails into a chipper ?

Has anyone ever put lumber with nails into a chipper. We have a potential job to remove a tree-house and the suggestion was made to sacrifice a set of chipper blades and run the lumber thru the chipper along with the rest of the tree. I've never tried that but I know that nails and screws are...

Insurance for one person, tree service business

Hi , My young friend who has been working for a tree company for three years has recently been doing freelance work. Several clients have told him he can have the work but only if he gets insurance (workman's comp, liability, disability? ) . So he is now reluctantly shopping around and...

Okay, so the oil bath is superior for air filtration, that works for us . Since the physics of this system is that the oil bath is a sticky pool to catch and hold particulates and NOT layer to prevent metal to metal contact… is it acceptable to put used motor oil in the oil bath air filter?

In the end we just gave the carb a good cleaning with $2 of carb/choke cleaner and a toothbrush. A more thorough treatment will be a rebuild which can be done hopefully before problems happen again , running great now. Is it possible the oil bath Air Cleaner is a source of micro amounts of...

The alternator is brand new so it should be perfect but that’s a good suggestion to check charging components. I put a battery disconnect switch on it to ensure there isn’t any drainage going on. The electric wiring on this thing is a bit of a rat’s nest with many splices and taped joints...

    Chipper's Ford 300 inline 6, sudden no-start

Okay, lots of progress but just want to say thanks for all the feedback. We cancelled the repair (no charge thankfully) and brought the chipper home. Took off the shroud and got full access to carb. Choke was stuck closed, so got it freed up but then it would start and immediately die. That...

    Chipper's Ford 300 inline 6, sudden no-start

The back story here is that I’m helping a young friend (who learned to climb/rig/cut trees by working for a tree outfit) to get established on his own in the tree trimming business. I have mechanical skills but limited time and he has lots more time but basic mechanical/engine repair skills. So...

Just heard from the mechanic: “…the carburetor was totally seized up and there was no fuel passing…. these are not made anymore….I can get one they my connections… carb is $850 and $150 to install it…” I said yes because time is money.

The cam and distributor are all driven by gears. “The camshaft is supported by four bearings pressed into the block. It is driven by gears from the crankshaft. Cam-shaft end play is controlled by a plate bolted to the front of the block. The distributor, located on the left side of the engine...

So many good comments and suggestions, thank you everyone! The saga continues. Today I’ll remove the valve cover and verify the cam is moving. If cam wasn’t moving, would the distributor be turning? (It is) or would I read 120psi compression in ALL cylinders? (I do) Spraying starting fluid...

I think what you described is the ignition module I have a aluminum box with absolutely no name or brand marking. Are these modules obsolete or can I plug in a similar replacement or is that what you mean as bypass it? I’ll have to check on the spark color at the coil. The spark at the plug...
