Stihl ms290, Does it call for a. 325 or a 3/8 chain and bar?

Ok, I'm not a pro so can you help me out? Can you run either or is there something on the standard sprocket which tells you?

Ms170 hard to start. Choke doesn't fully close

Have a nearly new ms170 and yes I know you pull it until it pops then slide to half choke. Problem is that at full choke it sometimes wont pop, no matter how many pulls. And you have to assume that continued pulling likely creates flooding. Yes I have a new plug, good blue spark, clean...

6 mo old ms170 will not start

I know, all we need is fuel, spark, air and compression. Filter is new, and this puppy won't even try to start on a little carb cleaner ! So, yes I've tried a new plug, and spark testing. I can see a blue spark at the plug. I've tried a spark testing tool. This saw will spark with a 4mm gap...

Stihl, No Visible Spark at Plug when Grounded

Over the years, troubleshooting a saw that won't start, I occasionally will test the plug for spark. Most everyone who has tried it will tell you sometimes you can see a spark if you have a good shadow, and sometimes you can't. So what's up when you can't see a spark, again when you have a good...

Gets to full throttle briefly then bogs down

This is on a Stihl concrete saw but the principles should be the same. It develops full rpm for a few seconds and bogs down. Only way to keep it going is adding choke, and the cycle repeats. Just won't hold full throttle. No doubt carb cleaning and adjusting is called for. Any suggestions...

Wrench/Socket to remove Stihl Compression Release

On my saw the clearance between the release and the head is tiny. Where do I find a socket with half the normal wall thickness? What size is it?

    Stihl Saw...Tillotson Carb Problem

This is a Stihl Concrete Saw, TS400.....it's the first cousin to a heavy Stihl Chain saw, so I though some posters might have some ideas! I'm guessing the same carbs might be used in lots of other saws. (I don;t have the carb # yet) It is 3.9ci, and has a 1.93" bore and a 1.34" stroke, and...

2 Chainsaws, 1 Blower - Would not fire with Gas or Starting Fluid

I know this sounds unlikely so I'll cover the items checked so far on all 3 pieces of equipment: Good Compression Good fresh gas, oil mixed properly Spark appears to be ok and blue Spark plugs new Plug when removed after pulling starter, is slightly moist All 3 carbs thoroughly gone through...

Craftsman 42 cc shainsaw runs great wide open, but will not idle

We have very thoroughly cleaned the carb, and replaced the fuel lines. The gas filter is clear. We have tried the L and H screws everywhere from 1 full turn out, to 4 turns out with little effect. (Both the L and H screws were initially at 1 3/4 turns out.) Suggestions appreciated.

Stihl 290 Chainsaw Chain/Bar is Binding after 30 min Operation - Oregon Brand of Bar

Installed a new 20" Forester brand bar and chain (not Oregon) on this saw and the bar and or chain get hot and will bind up the saw after about 30 minutes of moderate sawing. I.E. at idle you cannot slide the chain with your hand, even though it's properly adjusted when cool. Curious if others...

Follow-up Success on Honing Heavy Scratches - With New Ring & Hone, Compression Up 50

Many posters on this great site may recall our spirited discussion about the pros and cons of 2 cycle cylinder honing about a month ago. The story ends with my saw being back together, running perfectly. Compression is up from 90 to 140. Investment= $28 hone and a $5 ring. Opinions varied...

I'm re-ringing 2 cycle saw. How much end gap in the ring, if you just have ONE ring??

I've heard all kinds of numbers from, just use the factory ring as is, up to .0xx". What's the best practice? Not sure of the ring makup, but it sort of looks like chrome. With all the chinese parts nowadays, we are often on our own! Also I assume the ring end taper goes down and the...

? Easiest way to test Compression Release Valve for leak

There must be 2-3 good ways to test one. Curious what others do. My approach is to adapt a regular air line and connect it to the male threads of the valve. I then put 100 psi of air pressure on the air line and you should know instantly if you have a leak.

Honing a Shihl Cylinder. What's the proper grit?

I've read several articles on cylinder honing, and recommended final grits of 240-400. I don't want to enlarge the bore, but just scuff the cylinder wall to receive a new ring set. What's the best to use?

Tillotson HS-273 Carb - Anyone know about this brand of carb and it's inner workings?

I have this carb in a saw and the saw runs great but will not idle. If you hold the slightest pressure on the trigger it will run smoothly at low rpm, but when you let off the trigger, it stops. I don't see an idle stop on the carb and I don't see one as part of the saw either. There is...

McCulloch3.4 Eager Beaver or Timber Bear - No Oil To Chain

No doubt the passage from the oil tank is plugged. I've put a lot of air pressure on the tank but can't get any oil to exit. I am sure the oil is supposed to exit right near the chain or sprocket, but I have not been able to identify the exact spot for further attention. If anybody has a...

    Stihl MS 290 No Spark

I see no spark on the plug when I ground it against the carb, and pull the rope. I've tried 2 plugs. I have the choke in the 'full choke' position. I have the chain brake 'on' or thrown forward. Shouldn't you be able to see a spark when pulling the rope? What is the next step? Any tips are...
