I will be praying for you and your family. I've been there before, I lost my dad in a farm accident five years ago. Sounds like he taught you to be a good man.
Elm, black cherry and white oak that the high line right of way guys left me last spring. Went and gathered it all up Saturday before Winter showed up again.
Generally speaking, sweet gum and sycamore. I've split some sycamore that splits fairly easy, though. Elm is not usually as bad as these. I don't think you'll have any trouble finding these two in your part of the country.
I've seen some medium dark brown walnuts that some might call red. Red oak tops are going to rot away fairly quick too, but not near as quick as hickory. Really, without pictures it might as well be a watermelon tree.
If it's got all of the bark and sapwood rotted off but is still laying around as a solid top, it sounds like walnut. Possibly cherry, depending what you call a red color.
It's my favorite light weight wood. If there is just a couple of glowing coals left, throw on some sassafras splits and you will have a roaring fire very shortly. It can be lit in a cold stove with just a twisted up piece of paper. Doesn't get punky like soft maple or some of the other light...
I just tried the double bit ax technique. First try I grabbed a sycamore round (probably not a good choice) and I got the ax stuck so bad I had to go get a hammer to tap it out. Then I tried some nobby red oak limbs, and I was pretty impressed. I'm sure my technique is lacking. I'm double...
Also, I like how with some kinds (elm, walnut, hackberry) if it has dried in the round for a couple of months, when you split it , the bark falls right off. Nice and clean.
Are you splitting by hand? Elm, sycamore, sweet gum, and some others won't split at all until they have sat for a few months. Oak, on the other hand, splits easily right away (usually) and wont dry at all until split.
I took a work trip to WI about ten years ago with a group of electricians to move a cheese making machine to Springfield, MO. Anyway, I got to try some of that Leinenkugles (I'm sure I just misspelled that) in honeyweiss. Great beer. I don't think it's available in AR:msp_sad:
