Little crane tips over rescued by 200 ton and 65 ton

Luckily no one was killed or hurt. He has owned the crane for about 4 months. The local "good guys" and the crane company that righted it have been betting on when he was going to dump it. He was trying to pick 3800 pounds when he was rated for 800 pounds. There was some damage to the house...

OSHA compliance rules for tree workers

I always thought that if you are using a face shield you shall also use eye protection as well? ANSI?

    Watch this video

I find it funny how OSHA requires you to be tied off if your head goes above 6 feet, I believe, after leaving the ground. If you are on a ladder though you are not required to tie off. Are these towers just tall ladders?

    Topping for removal

h Wasn't expecting the thread to go this deep. I am very aware of all of the physics that come into play with tree work. My point was a good ground man is equally as important as a good climber. I would not hesitate a second to hang a top with 6 inches of wood with me standing on it...

    Freak Accident

This happened about 18 weeks ago a total random act of nature. We had two days of wind gusts in the 30-40 MPH range for two days, (Wed and Thur). I get a call on Friday after noon that someone was stuck by a falling tree. I work in the maintenance division that does the tree work and the call...

Good Rigging control System. Who has one?

They might be a small crane themselves but you can always get a bigger crane. The labor cost of rigging everything labor wise VS. getting a larger crane. The answer is pretty clear in my opinion. I have yet to come into a situation where there is a lot of stuff over hanging a house, building...

    Topping for removal

Get a groundie who can run rope and there should be no more shaking than when the top first left.

    Stop/slowdown rot in maple stump

Continual staring at the rot will slow it down. Build the tree house at six feet with proper structural footings that are not attached to the tree and you will be left with a two foot tall table that can be capped.

Have you ever refused a job because you think its too dangerous?!

I have never turned a job down because there is always a way to do it safely. I also understand that you can be beyond safe and freak things happen, those suck.

cutting poisen ivy /oak/sumak(sp) at the base of tree,

I believe it is around five years or so that the oils are still active the plant even when it is dead. Tecnu is great any grease cutting dish soap works just as well and is a lot cheaper. When washing PI off use cold water, hot water opens the pores more making it more susceptible to get it...

Pear Tree Id and Maint Questions

Light, light, light, prune for light penetration throughout the canopy. It is a little to late to be pruning for that not. Prune heavily next year when they are dormant, beat them up, prune hard to stimulate new growth, pears fruit on second year wood.

Best chain for trimming apple trees

If you are going for fruit production March is probably the latest that you would want to do any major pruning. I guess better later than never though.

My climbing rope is full of pine pitch. Help!

Did a 65 foot 7 leader white pine removal two weeks ago. It was easier going up than coming down.

hanging a block with minimal tree damage

3-4 inch pump hose and run the sling through it. Check with your local fire department and rental center to see if they have any old stuff laying around.

    Advice on dead wood rigging

You can always find a crane that can reach. Tell the homeowner that they are avoiding the inevitable by taking out the dead top. From what you said it sounds like the tree will be dead in a few years anyways. It is far cheaper to and safer to remove a living/semi-living tree in my opinion.

    Crazy folks

Helped out out on a job this past winter 167 white pines removed by crane. Most were done with a 50 ton then the 80 ton was brought in for the long picks, damn that thing could reach. Cranes, chipping, and stumps ground $27,000. The mill paid the homeowner $21,000 for the wood.
