I just have to brag on my guys for a minute....My lead arborist took 1st overall in the MW ISA TCC in Omaha last weekend, and one of our apprentices didn't finish last! (which was his goal) Thanks to the other climbers for the fierce competition and the Midwest ISA for putting on another great...

    Milling Utility poles

I have hired a guy to bring his portable mill out this Saturday to mill up some used utility poles. I have about 30 of them total. He's charging $65 per hour, which I thought was reasonable. Then I came across a really nice Walnut tree on a job, and I think we're going to do a partial trade...

    New saw technology

I attended a local Arborists Association meeting last night and the guest speaker was a rep from a local equipment (stihl) dealer. Some of you likely already know some of what was presented, but I thought I would share anyway. The guest brought examples of the new carburetors, some of which...

    New Dodge/ Ford Trucks

We will be in the market for a new small 4x4 bucket truck this spring- Anyone have any experience with late model (last couple years) Dodge 5500 or Ford 550's? It looks like those may be our only options, except for maybe an ISUZU or similar cab- over with a 4x4 conversion. Not sure if they...

    fungus ID

Can some of you fine gentlemen take a look at this one? This is on a mature Pin Oak 30" DBH just above the ground line. I suspect that it is a result of some mechanical damage from years ago. Overall health of the tree seems OK.

    Getting shocked???

I finally got around to replacing the broken and missing amber strobe lights on my bucket truck. There was one on the back that had been broken out by the chipper chute- the other on the back was OK, and had worked previously. The two on the front have never been there since I've owned the...

    Crane Service Manual

I have a McCabe-Powers PM 103 Crane that I need a service manual for. Just a shot in the dark that someone might know where I could get one. The company is out of business, can't find on EBAY, google search brings nothing.

    Heated driveway???

If the weather ever breaks this spring I'm going to have a concrete driveway installed. I was thinking that since I already have the OWB, why not run a few lines inside the concrete and have on demand driveway clearing in the winter when needed. I know some people with radiant heat in their...

    treehouse masters

Watching 'Treehouse Masters" now, while waiting for this ice storm to do something. They're building a $45,000 treehouse directly underneath a three phase power line lead. I know our policy is to remove any treehouses upon finding them near the conductors. This one is in California, I can...

    central heat question

Im running an OWB with a heat exchanger on the central unit. It usually keeps the house comfortable, but in this extremely cold weather ive noticed that it cant keep up. When the propane furnace does come on, the volume of air coming out of the vents seems much greater, almost like the fan is...

    altec customer service notice 505

Hey, just to cry a little and maybe help some of you out- the altec csn-505 "drum weldment replacement" is only repaired by altec for 10 years. This is the recalled part between the upper and lower boom on the LRV 55 units. The part wears and eventually causes the upper boom to contact the...

    Promotional Items

We've been asked to sponsor an event, and wanted to give away some promotional Items. My question is, what was the coolest/best thing you ever gave away, or got, with a company logo on it? Something that you kept for a long time or that others asked, "where'd you get that?" The last thing I...

    Municipality bid

I recently bid on a municipal project by the crew-hour, at their request. The results came in, and we were right in the middle, as usual, but the winning contractor had submitted two bids: one that didn't win, and one that matched the lowest bid that was submitted after the deadline. This...

    motorized log cart

There's a guy running around here who has a 2 wheeled log cart on his truck, similar to the hand pushed 2 wheeled log dollys. Looks like it has an echo 2 cycle motor on it.. It looks manufactured, not homemade. I've searched google and can't find one...Anyone know what I'm talking about or...
