    New splitter from Hud-Son

Has anyone used The Animal from Hud-son? (http://www.hud-son.com/woodsplitter.htm) Seems like a good idea. If I had the funds, I'd make one myself. I wonder how much they're looking to get for one of those.

    Half- Inch Wedge?

I'm considering some sort of box wedge for my splitter, and I didn't know if anyone had experience with making weges out of 1/2" thick steel. They would only be about four inches high, but the thinner they are, the less binding there will be. Is this too thin?

    Propane Engine

Before I get to making my splitter, I didn't know if anyone had experience with gas engines that have been converted to propane. Specifically, are they more expensive fuelwise? Are they more or less reliable? Louder? HArder to work on/ have repaired? I'm thinking that an older forklift motor...

    Splitter Engine

I'm thinking about making a splitter with the Barnes-Haldex 28 GPM two-stage pump. From the calculator in Grainger and Northern, it seems that a little less than 15hp is required to run this pump properly. I've come to the conclusion that I really would like to use a Honda engine if possible...

    Splitter's hydrualic oil filter

How often do you guys change your splitter's hydraulic oil filter or clean it. I just fird up my Iron and Oak after a few months of not using it and it ran fine under no load, but when I started to split it sounded like it was about to die. Once the cycle was complete, it sounded fine again...

    New Toy

Hey CTKiteboarding, Where in CT are you? I saw the AAA Advantage dumpster in the first picture and it made me wonder.

    ram design question

A small strap over the front of the cylinder seems like a good insurance policy. Also, because the way the cylinder applies its force, it should never have to contain the full force that the hydraulic cylinder is capable of producing. One problem that I've run into is the ram flexing towards the...

    Wedge Design

Half inch steel seems a bit thin, doesn't it? I thought that most commercially made splitters had 1" wedges and that 3/4" was about the thinnest that anybody made their wedge. How tall can you make it without worrying about excessive twist? Do you need to make it longer to compensate for a lack...

    Iron & Oak Splitter

I have an Iron and Oak splitter. I've used it for about two years now, without any problems. Mine has a Honda engine, which starts on the first pull, always, even in february. Mine was advertised as a 30 ton model, it has a 5" cylinder and is a horizontal only model. It has never bogged down...

    Wedge width

It seems that everyone uses 1" steel for their splitter wedges. Can a shorter wedge be thinner? If one makes the wedge longer (i.e. more area in contact with the I-beam) does this compensate for a thinner wedge? If you were to make a box wedge, where there are two vertical wedges welded to the...

    Got it all running

looks like a pretty sweet set up. How tall is the wedge? How thick is the wedge? What type of pump do you have on it? What type of engine is it? What type of valve are you using and what are you going to replace it with? What type of piston is it, and what's the cycle time like? Have fun!

    Splitter Pumps, etc.

Does anyone use pumps other than Barnes-Haldex two stage models on their log splitters? They seem to offer the best way to minimize horsepower, but I heard that they can't be rebuilt. My 16 GPM hasn't broken down yet, but does any one know if this is true? Most processors use single stage...

    Tonnage?

I was thinking about the requisite tonnage for a splitter in trying to decide how large of a cylinder is necessary (trying to reduce cycle time). Two thoughts came to mind First, does the stroke length affect the tonnage required? I know that the diameter of the piston ultimately determines...

Splitter rig engine with two PTO's

I've seen on eBay some combination log-splitter/ buzz saw rigs. It seems that the splitter runs off one end of the engine and the saw runs off another PTO shaft at the other end. This set-up appears ideal because one doesn't need to worry about the adverse effects of running two functions off of...

    Cut-off saw

Hydraulically driven saws seem good in that they can be stopped and started when needed, but they require a lot of power to begin with; you wouldn't want the operation of your cut-off saw the affect the speed of your ram. A processor on many levels seems impractical in that I only deal with wood...

    Cut-off saw

I was thinking about making a stationary firewood cut-off saw. In looking at the price of large circular blades, as well as the price of teeth, the specialized equipment/ skills required to balance them, etc. I think that a chainsaw cut-off machine would be best. Anyway, in looking on eBay, old...

    Wedge design

I can imagine that you do get a lot of bad splinters and junk pieces. Are you refering to a specific model that you have used? I know that on my conventional Iron and Oak wedge I still get a considerable amount of minced pieces of wood. Maybe you have the same experience with your regular wedge...

    Wedge design

I was wondering if anyone has tried making unusual wedges for their log splitters. It seems that some of the manufacturers have interesting "box" type wedges for making uniform wood. Has anyone attempted something like this or anything else beyond the typical two or four-way wedge? What's...
