Does porting shorten the life of a chainsaw?

Yes, as mentioned. Dimples / texture keeps fuel from puddling. Cold idle the fuel tends to want to fall out of the stream, dimples / texture encourages the fuel to stay with the stream. A convergent inlet would do the same thing by increasing the velocity, giving the fuel less chance to drop...

    16:1, 20:1, 40:1, 50:1....... how dry can I run this thing?

Back in the day, it was common practice to mix 2-smoker fuel in a one gallon glass cider jug. Not even legal anymore (dot regs) The trick was to take a glance at the jug and you knew how long to shake it to put the oil (30w usually) back in the mix. 2-smoker oils now supersedes the best...

    Fiskars was hungry

Why move it? It is clear what is going on here. While some can see the product of hard work. The gains of a job well done , and you are commended on it! While there are others that will notice that you obviously have more firewood then you need, and how you need to give some of that firewood...

Best bar length for a 660

Picked up a 28" GB Titanium a few years ago that balances well and has given good service.. It seems to be about as long as you can go with out going to a lighter built bar, it is just short of nose heavy.

What 18" chain is best for a 361?

Nothing beats Stihl chain. RSC would be a good fast chain. It is my bet that your local dearer can set you up as well.

New bar and chain seemed 'grabby' when I was cutting... offer your wisdom please!

Grabby, or dull? A lot of chain just off the real can be a little dull and feel 'grabby' but in reality it's just not cutting well. Touch the chain up a little and see how it does.

    What is Horsepower?

Gotta love the way some things are tested. Like the guy that has the best coonhounds, his tail-gate says, "When The Tailgate Drops, The Bullsht Stops" Talk HP all you want at a drag-strip, and someone is going to want to see some time-slips. Timed cuts is the only way I will ever test a...

    We're next!!!

Not sure that it will come down to the end-service level? After hearing about it a thousand times in the vehicle repair level, I still started a huge pile scrap metals from 'ex' air-pumps and the like. After all Mr Tommy, why would the government that thinks of these things, bite the hand...

It had a very nice lay-out before, it was one one the best looking user-friendly forums on the net. Now it is one of the worst.

MS310 Help with basic mod please.

Welcome to the site! Drill Under the deflector plate, drill a big hole, or a lot of little holes, any size larger then stock will help. "H" Adjustment 290/310/390's are very pronounced when there too rich, they have an easy to distinguish 'burble' with a little practice. A...

What is a good saw to collect ?

Collecting to run, I would be stacking old 041's on the shelf. Not ran much anymore, but stihl around, stihl an ironclad workhorse. 041's , if there were a Hall of Fame for saws, would or will be one of them.

True benefits of a muffler mod

Yes, that is a 'divergent duct' , used to decrease the velocity and increase the pressure of the exhaust for a longer/stronger burn in the cat. This is more of a tuned exhaust 'piped'.

True benefits of a muffler mod

Thank you! Nothing like hitting the nail on the head. It's a fact that the muffler restriction is the favorite place for the manufacture to limit 'outputs' , it's extremely cost effective. It is also very easy for the end user to open up, or have the restriction opened up...

    MS660 Superstock

Good Job! The saw does sound rich, but that is not 660 sized wood. The rich out of the cut, clears in a cut idea comes in wood big enough to increase the cylinder firing pressure (lugging down in a cut). A little more timing might also bring that pressure up enough to clear...

    Tool Forum

Not as much as you might think. Back in the day, things were made out of heavy iron, and heavy truck, industrial equipment and tractor rims did not show much effect when hit wrong. Grayhound buses were the only aluminum rims I knew of, and there was not a not of chrome rims, you just...

    is this ironwood?

Ironwood is not that hard to split unless you hit a knot, elm on the other hand will fight you till it's in the stove.

    is this ironwood?

One of the hottest firewoods your going to find, Ironwood looks like this.... It also makes fantastic handles and wood objects that require a close-grain very hard wood. My guess, going with Siberian Elm as mentioned. Not that far down on the charts as a fuel wood..... Link...
