    MS290 MS310 MS390 Love

Hey! Tell me what you've learned! I'd like to keep mine a loooong time. I bought my 290 used off of Craigslist for $220 about 9 years ago. Usually starts on the 2nd pull. I'm trying to learn to do my own work on them, and really enjoying what I've done so far.

    Highly valuable firewood pallets

Walnut can be fatal to horses, so it's important that pallets that are later ground up for bedding not contain walnut.

    Splitting/Chopping Tool Review Thread

Look back on pg. 50 of this thread, I use the Truper version of that quite a bit. If I have some big rounds that look like they'll split easy (cherry, ash, red oak), I'll save them back and split them by hand with that just to keep in shape.

Y'All are a bad influence. I was at Lowe's last night and they had one IsoCore maul left, so I got it. I can't believe I bought another 8# maul...most of my splitting is done with a 4.5# axe. They had quite a few 10# Fiskar sledges left, and I'm kind of regretting that I didn't get one of those.

How do you sharpen your x27?

I got a Work Sharp knife & tool sharpener for Fathers' Day. It really works nice on anything Fiskars, especially if you go down to a leather stropping belt. Before that...I've used everything from a raker file to a round stone.

re: epoxy Idunno. I've got a Truper splitting axe that I use quite a bit, and the top of the epoxy has been cracked a long time without giving out. I've been using it hard for several months now, and still no wiggle in the handle. I've like it to loosen up so I can replace it with a wood handle...

    Harbor Freight 20 Ton

I don't have that particular splitter, but the vertical position is nice when you've got a big, big round that you don't want to lift that high. Some guys would rather noodle or sledge-n-wedge those down to a liftable size.

What tool is in the first picture? It's not often you hear "this thread is useless without words!". Also, is the bit on the Stihl curved or straight?

    Splitting/Chopping Tool Review Thread

I never swung an axe, owned a chainsaw, or lit a fire until I was 48. I split most things with the hydraulic splitter, but lately have been wanting to split some of the easier stuff by hand. The Truper was my first purchase, I think $26 at the time from Lowe's. It was blunt and took a lot of...

    Splitting/Chopping Tool Review Thread

Lined up most of my "striking tools" for a family picture, in order of most used to least used. Truper Super Split, 8# Iron City maul, Estwing camp axe, Kobalt hatchet, Fiskars x24 & x27, Chopper 1, 6# no-name maul, 3 1/2 Collins Michigan. Here's a view from the top, to show how they all...

    Fair warnin' to y'all

I'm guessing you don't have any snow on the ground yet? So this would be a good week for me to bring up a couple sheets of tin to cover your stacks?

    PTO Shaft Length (Fransgard Winch)

I think the only sure way is to put it on your tractor. My winch has been on 4 different tractors, and no two were the same...even with them all being the same make. Measure the shortest point carefully (that's where the shafts are level) to avoid punching out your rear seal.

Placing hot ash into tractor loader bucket

I'd be more concerned with ash getting through the air cleaner. Ash particles are pretty small.

    Needed an ATV Log trailer...

Yeah...I don't think you're going to like it. If you need a place to get rid of it, just park it back behind my barn. ;) Please post more pics when you get that screen done, can't wait to see it finished!

How much firewood do I need for next year?

If that's a picture of your house, then no wonder you're burning so darn much wood!

    looking for good hatchet

I've been swinging a hatchet quite a bit lately. I've got one of those Estwing's that was given to me for my birthday probably 25+ years ago. It's good, but a little on the light side. My favorite is a Cobalt from Lowe's, but it took a bunch of filing...like most things these days.
