New Chainsaw Selection - Advice Needed

Those Aussie hardwoods look tough. I run a Stihl 441 here in the the north of the U.S. It's a good balance for me for the most part. From what I've seen of stuff like Yellowbox, you'd do well to get the biggest saw that is comfortable for you to use, regardless of brand. Keep your chain sharp...

    Fiskars X27

Have put around 20 cords on my X27. Didn't read through all 6 pages, but the metallurgy is shoddy. Even blunted, it still works just as well as a 6 pound maul in RED OAK, and it's easier to swing. For what it's worth, I'll be pinching my pennies for a Gransfors Bruks. The idea of a hand made...

Wood splitting debate. Maul vs splitter

This is my happy place. Splitting by hand is my preferred method because that's a pile of nice, straight red oak, mostly. My father bought a splitter for the rough stuff cause they depreciate so slowly around these parts, it was cheaper to buy one and take the hit than it was too rent one 3...

    Husqvarna S2800 Splitting Axe-First Impressions

That's fine. The edge on my X27 has been rolling right over. Have heard nothing but stellar reviews on the GB metallurgy and would love to own a tool that my son would be proud to have handed down to him.

Still too warm to cut, but...

I'm a northern boy then. I'll make firewood until the snow is too deep for sure footing. The saw doesn't seem to mind 15 below. Me either.

    Husqvarna S2800 Splitting Axe-First Impressions

I'm with the rest of the big fellers. The handle looks a little short for my 6'4" frame. BUT! Would have to get it in my hands. The metallurgy is what gets me though. For 70 or 80 bucks, I'll keep pinching my pennies for a Gransfors Bruks.

    Which Echo?

Had more experience with the 590. Great saw so far. Was out cutting Thursday here in MN. If it wasn't single digit temps, it sure felt like it. Saw did very well in the cold. Had the 20" bar buried in frozen Red Oak. Does just fine. Mentioned in an earlier post that I run a 441 C-Mtronic,(my...

    Which Echo?

My dad just bought a new 590. Hasn't put more than a tank of gas through it yet though. So far, it's kept up with my Stihl 441. Both running 20" bars in frozen Red Oak. It's lighter than the 441, but I assume that's due to the use of more plastic in the construction, a lighter anti-vibe system...

A load of logs. Prices up.

Has there been a sudden surge in demand for paper products? Are there fewer loggers? I don't get where the ridiculous demand is coming from.

A load of logs. Prices up.

What are these mills making? Paper? Biomass? Pellets?

A load of logs. Prices up.

$100 for how many cord? Mixed hardwood?

A load of logs. Prices up.

I sure wouldn't drop my prices if I had enough ready to sell. Get the money while I could.

A load of logs. Prices up.

I'm a little further south. Just the way things are. Glad I don't have to buy processed wood. Some are charging as much as $470 a cord!

A load of logs. Prices up.

11 cord load of red oak logs for $1350 30 miles north of the Twin Cities. Any Minnesota boys hear of a cheaper rate? Cruised Craigslist, no dice. Thanks!

    Burning White Oak.

In the fireplace, white oak seems to last a little longer than the red. Tough to start the fire with though. Also, when I split the stuff 2 years ago, I was splitting with a stove or furnace in mind. Next time I get into some, I'll make sure to chunk it down a little more;)

    Burning White Oak.

I think. Burns hot and long and makes a lot of noise when I throw another split on. Love it!

    How's Your Wood Pile Looking?

If this Ebola thing gets out of control(I'm not buying into the sensationalism) firewood will be at the very top of our list of worries.

Kinetic Wood splitter...Beating a dead horse.

As a machinist, I'm curious about what parts you're scrounging and what parts you're making/fabing. Are you running Gibbs for programming, or making the youngsters program longhand? The questions are endless.
