    Picture of old time sawmill

I already posted these pictures once, but they are from our old sawmill! It was an old double band saw which used 3 phase 220. If anyone has any knowledge about these types of saws, please let me know! and yes, a house was built around it :) Also, here is a picture of our...

    Forestry ATV?

I own a kubota RTV, and it is by far the worst purchase I have ever made. The thing gets high centered on everything and is VERY lacking in the power department. I almost never drive it anymore just because it is such a lame utility vehicle. It is advertised for golf course usage for Christ's...

    Girls on tractors

haha thats great! my dad actually bought my mom a kubota for Christmas back in the late 80s! She use to mow the fields with it and did everything with it. On another note, how safe is that chipper??? I personally would be scared to put anything through it if anyone was around! I guess I am...

Felling Dangerous trees, whilst on fire.

I would never do anything like that... way to dangerous for my taste, but i remember reading a thread about falling timber during forest fires. check out http://arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=26578&highlight=cut+tree+fire Too bad all the pictures are gone, it was really amazing stuff!

    Oregon and Washington at war

I chatted with the Stephen C. Sillett mentioned in that article above about reiterations in these older trees. Its pretty amazing to find douglas firs and huckleberry bushes growing 200+ feet up in a redwood tree!

How long does it take to split a cord?

i only split by hand, and it takes me WAYY longer than an hour to do a cord. You gotta fall the tree, limb it, and then buck it up. I dont know about you guys, but i split the rounds wherever they land. This means that I am almost always off balence, and am always working in a tight area. The...

    Bugs in my lumber

thats exactly what i saw yesterday while splitting wood. I was chopping up a fairly large old madrone that had fallen a while back. It was easy to split, but occasionally i would come across those guys deap in the heartwood. I used a little stick to pry them out of their homes whenever I could...

    Driving wedges with a maul

you must be a true woodsman! I completely agree with your point of view and do the same myself. Whenever i come accross a round that has too many knots in it or is too difficult to split, i simply walk away from it! There is nothing shameful than walking away and using your time more effectively...

    Driving wedges with a maul

i dont like the head... looks to narrow and doesnt widen soon enough... i think it could easily get stuck in a hardwood if you are splitting at 90% power... but then again im in love with my maul :) to each his own

Healthy Forests Act - is it helping?

i completely agree. too much of anything is never good. Slash build up from previous logging operations is a diaster waiting to happen. it takes a LONG time for slash to completely decompose when it is above the ground all piled up. While it provides a nice habitat for the smaller critters, it...

Healthy Forests Act - is it helping?

slash isnt all bad. left over slash can create perfect homes for small rodents. As the small rodent population soars because of an increased amount of potential niches, so does the predator population. This increases the wildlife population within the logged area. of course too much of...
