less horsepower I have a pto driven splitter. it's 2 different size gears connected by a chain . 3 to 1 ratio.it speeds the rpms up from 540 to 1620. It reduces your (my tractor) from 25 to 8 1/3..I was told on another post.

if you are looking at 2 stihls already, buy the one with the most HP. I have had a 028 super Av for 15 years, still a fantastic saw for small trees and limbs. For big trees and firewood however, I bought the 440 Magnum last fall and I love it. I kept it in the house for 9 months :)
