So, my friend wants to buy some wood from me

In this sort of situation, when asked "how much?" my standard reply is "Your undying gratitude and a favor to be named later."

White Oak takes forever to dry.

I split my black oak (red oak family) into large chunks for those long, overnight burns. I really don't know how long it takes to dry. The stuff I'm burning is at least 5-6 years CSS. Wonderful stuff! I don't have to get up to reload in the middle of the night and my wife rarely has to feed the...

    Thermoelectric Fan: Yay or Nay...

I have the $60 Ecofan. It pushes warm air towards the kitchen. You notice the difference when it's not on. The stove has a blower, but it's noisy and will dry your eyeballs. I only use it when I need a quick temp boost.

That's why I only take good drugs.

Does anyone use the heat powered fans?

I also have one. It pushes warm air towards the kitchen, which otherwise is noticeably colder. I paid $90 for it and feel it was worth it. The blades are really soft aluminum and easily bent. The stove has a built-in blower, but it is noisy and dries your eyeballs. These are silent and work when...

Cold Weather Threat = Firewood Orders

I just want to say something on carburetor icing. Having spent a lot of time with Volkswagens, I've had a little experience. It is worst at temps close to but above freezing. The humidity is higher above freezing and the cooling effects of the air flow and fuel evaporation drop the temp in the...

    Wood furnace and insurance help!

Baseboard heaters, that's what I was told by my insurer. They just want to be sure the pipes don't freeze while you're away. Cheap and easy.

    Firewood / Log splitter estimate

Here's what New York has to say on the subject: "Consumer Alert Bureau of Weights and Measures How to Avoid Getting Burned When Buying Firewood Whether you use it to heat your home or just to burn it occasionally in your fireplace, you should be a smart shopper when you purchase firewood. What...

    Firewood / Log splitter estimate

From the Michigan Department of Natural Resources "Firewood, in non-packaged form, is sold by a measurement called a "cord" or "fraction of a cord." A "cord" is defined as 128 cubic feet when the wood is neatly stacked in a line or row. A standard or full "cord" would be 8 feet long, 4 feet...

    Firewood / Log splitter estimate

No, I mean that a face cord is an indeterminate unit. It's like asking how long is a rope. There is no standard for a face cord. It is a unit most likely invented by an unscrupulous firewood vendor in order to defraud the unwary. A real cord is 128 cu ft., a face cord can be anything depending...

    Wood splitter advice

I may have missed it, but I don't think anyone asked: Where do you live? What kind of wood are you splitting? This is important. If you're out west, the vast majority of wood is either softwood or relatively easy splitting hardwood. I get by very nicely with a 5-ton electric splitter, but I...

    I bought wood today.

I'm used to camping in places where it's easy to scrounge wood. Now that I've "matured" we stay in real campgrounds, sometimes even pay. Those places are generally stripped of anything that can be gathered and broken up without tools. There is NO WAY I'm going to buy firewood by the bundle. I...

    electric logslitter

I absolutely LOVE my 5-ton Homelite. Very little noise, no fumes, no gas, starts anytime I need it with the push of the pedal (modification). I've had it about 10 years now. So far I've had to replace the wear pads under the pusher and add hydraulic oil. I burn 3.5 - 5 cords/yr and stay 3+...

    Firewooder’s Motivation Thread

All of my existing stacks are full and under cover, so I started another. Already have 3+ years, but I just can't seem to stop. My motivation? My wife complains about being cold if it gets below 68 f.

    Pine cones

I collect Ponderosa pine cones for my fire starters. I use very little kindling, just a couple of cones & maybe a slab of bark. Hit it with a blast of the torch, et voila, we have fire. They also look nice in the little wicker basket next to the stove. With the wildfire danger so high here, more...

Converting pole barn into wood storage

I've resorted to cribbing the ends of my stacks to control the weight against the "bookends". It's not really that much trouble since it doesn't have to be done as carefully as free-standing cribbing. This one was vertical when stacked, the tee posts may not survive In your case, I would be...
