Any pointers for drilling (milling) holes in bars for modified alaskan mills?

As others have said, a carbide end mill works best. However, I have been able to get the job done with a sharpened carbide tipped hammer drill bit in a drill press. Low rpms and lots of oil and pressure.

    nice Burl table

Cool looking table. I have some large live oak root balls in my barn I hope to do that with some day.

    Lo-pro + Malloff grind + 2 piece 066 = new CSM record

    Looks like fun. Nice work.

Haven't been by in a while- just saying Howdy!

Still have the 084  but seldom get to use it:(. I've been working on our house we recently bought so time for hobbies has been nil. It was a vacant short sale house so the project list is extensive. I'm just about finished with the back yard which is a relief. I'm supposed to lay sod...

Nothing new and exciting to report. Just saying hi to those that remember me.

What are you building with your milled wood? merged

It's still there- but I am not. I've moved twice in the 2 years and it looks like I might move again shortly. Hopefully this will be the last one for a good while and I can set up again.

Neat contraption. Sorry to hear about your hand (yea, I've been gone too long). I hope it's healing well.

Surfacing large slabs with a router

Great thread! I would post pics of my router rig but someone beat me to it.:D Here's another method I've used for badly warped slabs. Just suspend the CSM rails over the slab and resaw. Use the freshly cut surface to mill the opposite side just as you would cut it off the log. You'll have...

    OK to remove clutch cover?

I mill without a cover but I made a guard for when the chain comes off.

Pics of old sawmill equipment in my own backyard (almost!)

Cool pics! How thick are those bands? They might make good knife blade stock.

Rounded out my milling saw fleet today - 084 AVEQ

I haven't tried this on a mill yet, but I'd like to for fun.:D

Rounded out my milling saw fleet today - 084 AVEQ

I still pop in from time to time.:D You are correct about my use of .325 on up to a 42" bar. I tried a 66" bar once. Didn't break but stretched like a rubber band. For me, .325 has the same advantages as lopro chain but it can withstand the power of the 084 due to a full depth tie strap...

    Howdy! Millin' Time!

Stihl Day!!! My Dad and I did a demonstration at a local Stihl dealer this weekend. We had a good time and sold some slabs right off the log to our surprise. Good times!

Chain tension on longer bars when milling.

http://www.holtecusa.com/holtechome.htm I left them a message asking for more information. I'm not positive that tooth pattern will work well in an end cut application. My guess is it will be pricey too. I'd be willing to try it if it not outrageous.

    Milled a Birch crotch today

If you get the slope just right the CSM will feed itself. I've been able to start the cut, tie the throttle down and completely let go on quite a few logs. It's nice being the one watching every once in a while.:D

    Sales counter top idea

Somewhere I saw pictures of floors done as you describe. 1" -+ cookies grouted in. A counter top would be interesting.
