    questions about heart rot

"In my opinion, the original crack was caused by another tree/branch falling and rubbing the stem. From my experience, alder doesn't grow in areas where the temperatures get low enough where the trees frost crack." We get Alders that freeze and split down here in Oregon near mt. Hood.

    questions about heart rot

For specifically red alder, if you see places on the bark where it looks like rust has been leaking out, its a good indication of damage beneath the bark that you cannot see without removing the bark. I live and work in areas where alder is very common and have tons of them on my property.

What are you guys doing per day??

First tier climbers are the more skilled/experienced climbers and are often the foreman On crew. Second tier climbers are essentially, climbers in training who serve as groundsmen. We only have 2 guys who dont either climb or work from a bucket truck.

What would you do in my shoes?

Portland oregon? Were flooded with climbers, just a heads up. Company I work for has 4 top tier climbers and 3 second tier climbers. Second tier climbers spend more time dragging brush than climbing. All the first tier climbers are close to 10 years experience or more.

Backup (non TIP) anchors for newbie Spur climbing

p.s. those trees are going to take you for a ride when you top them. tall skinny trees do that, you just have to ride it out, shake the pee out of your boots and keep going.

Backup (non TIP) anchors for newbie Spur climbing

using a nearby tree to rig out of is a good idea. though I don't think I would use a cable brace to keep the tree from falling, they are more likely to blow out a top than fall over. pay attention to the tree (alder) on the way up and inspect for damage. how high you climb depends on how much...

Backup (non TIP) anchors for newbie Spur climbing

those look like alders, be careful, they are brittle. if your worried about sliding down the tree then put a full wrap around the tree with your lanyard and stay on the high side. in the case of a fall it will bite down on the tree and you wont fall. use a sling or rope loop with a carabiner as...

    Rescue-8 as a lowering device … question

treenate has the right idea. take a wrap around the tree, run the rope through a crotch and have a ground guy run the line. there are other ways to do it but that's the least technical and easiest to set up.

    New guy looking for advice

I started off at home with no education and learned by trial and error. eventually (when I had learned most of the climbing methods) I made the career change. from what ive seen, most guys start off on the ground and work their way into the trees after a year or two if it interests them and they...

    THE WILD TREES, Richard Preston

M.D. Vaden, good to come across you on here. We met at a diner down in California last summer. I was wearing my work hoody and you recognised the company name/logo. My wife, her grandmother and i were visiting the redwood forest for our first time. Our visit was only for a day so we didn't have...

    Oregon Ash + pruning questions

I see your point but remember that Manuel is not a climber and wont have the gear that we have. His options are limited and working from a ladder that is tied to the tree would be safer for him than trying to work in the tree without a harness and not tied in. Home owners do it all the time. I...
