    Are you still burning

We're gonna let the OWB burn out today or whenever it dies. It takes a couple days for it to be truly 'out'. Jon

    bought some chaps

I wanted to order from Bailey's but the shipping charges killed the deal for me. Instead, I found a set of "pro" Husqvarna chaps on Amazon and bought them - free shipping. I like them but... The folks in Mexico that make them have no concept of Left and Right. The two legs are made the same...

Ok guys, who burnt the most thread!

I'd estimate that we've gone through 12-13 cords in the OWB, and still burning full time. Last year the firr was allowed to go out on June 7th, so we're looking at another month yet - probably one more cord. Jon

    Got A Timberwolf TW-P1

I borrowed a table from another TW-P1 owner. For me, it's too small. When I split a big round, there's no room to leave one half on the table and still be able to split the other half. For the $400 that TW want for it, I'll build my own - much wider than theirs. Jon

Does Burning Green Wood In Broiler Work?

Agreed! I'm going to quit burning green wood in my OWB and go back to railroad ties!! ;-) I still have to say that I have never seen an OWB - mine or anyone else's that smokes like a coal-fired locomotive. Causing a traffic hazard or hiding multiple buildings from the smoke is - for me - damn...

Does Burning Green Wood In Broiler Work?

The smoke from my CB 5036 is nowhere near thick enough to not be able to see through it. Not does it come close enough to the ground to where it would be a hazard for driving through. The top of the stack is only 12 and a half feet above ground. Even burning railroad ties or tires, it would seem...

Does Burning Green Wood In Broiler Work?

Firebrick43 said: "Because most boilers smoke worse than than anything else when burned with green wood. Does yours? I don't know but I can show you half a dozen that do. One so badly that it's dangerous to drive by as the smoke makes vision on the road nil with the prevailing winds. I think...

    Leaning Tree Methods / Advice

When you finish the back cut on a bored example, can/should you just keep cutting from inside through the holding wood? Is that worse than stopping the bore cut and then cutting the holding wood from the back? Seems like a "horse apiece" but I haven't any real experience upon which to draw...

Does Burning Green Wood In Broiler Work?

I have - and do - burned unseasoned, green, wet stuff in my boiler. As has been said, it still heats the water that heats my house. Nearly everything I've burned this season was harvested last summer; mostly ash but some elm and walnut. The walnut is from late in 2012, so was a year old going...

    Wood pellets in/near Bangor, Maine?

My younger brother and his wife are looking for a source of pellets in Bangor, and having a hard time finding any retailer with stock. Anyone here know of a store that might have some? Thanks! Jon

    wanted free firewood

Hey - my neighbor with the tree service brings loads of wood to my place! Maybe he'd haul to PA from Minnesota, too. ;-) Of course, the loads include all the brush and branches as well as the chips from grinding the stump, so I have to deal with all that. It's still a screaming deal, though...

The Best Underground Pex pipe for OWB

'Tis known as ThermoPEX. It's also known to be expensive - $12 per foot or so. Jon

    Speculation on next years market?

My CB 5036 was, if I recall correctly, around $6700 for just the boiler. With heat exchangers (3), ThermoPEX, inside PEX, fittings and such, I have around $10k in the whole system. I did everything but build the new furnace plenum, which was $300. The quote your guy got wasn't unreasonable, I...

    Propane Now Pushing $5/gal?

Is this thread going to end up in the Political section? Can we stick to pricing issues, and not worry about tin-foil hat crap, please? I have a 500-gallon propane tank, sitting at 55% of capacity. It's been that way for 18 months, and I don't mind that at all. If prices stay high, I'll have to...

    Propane Now Pushing $5/gal?

The "rationing" is being done at the retail level so that there's enough supply to sell to those who really need it. Around here, dealers are/were limiting customers (not commercial operations, I think) to 200 gallons. This is not like the 70s when the government decided when, who and where...

    Central Boiler corn/pellet burner

Holy Cow! Forty-two bucks a day for a month is $1260 for fuel. I can burn propane and spend a third of that. Or, buy wood - dry, split wood - and spend a third. (Two cords per month at $200 per cord.) Corn, at 10 bushels per day, would have to go for a buck-twenty a bushel to be cost-effective...

How's your wood pile holding out?

I started the season with about 15 cords of mixed hardwood in the shed. About 60 percent is still there, so I should be good. 3 months down; 4 to go. There are ~6 or so more cords stacked outside but that's intended for next season - it'll burn if I need it. We used 11-12 cords last season but...

    OWB shopping (kind of)

Oh, yeah... Not only do we save by not burning propane to heat the house, our electric bill went down by ~$60 per month because we're getting our water heated by the boiler. I figured a 5-year return on the cost of the installed boiler. We've since bought another saw and a Timberwolf (used)...

    OWB shopping (kind of)

I installed a CB Classic 5036 last year (Fall of 2012) and haven't been unhappy with it at all. The dealer is 15 miles away but I haven't required any service or support. Did the installation myself, except needed a new furnace plenum to fit the heat exchanger below the AC coil. I can shut off...

Do you cut wood right behind your house? I'm jealous!

"Wood Fairy!" Funny stuff - even though that "Wood Fairy" rang my doorbell last night, asking if he could drop a load of ash in my yard. He owns a tree service and his own 'dump' is full 'til he can burn everything in the pile. Snow's coming and he can't pile any more in there and still clear...
