    When it rains it pours

While I agree that pros should have "pro" saws, if they're idiots like this, then they should only have a harbor freight hand powered crosscut saw. I've got a couple old husky 51s, a couple 55s, a 257, and a 455. Even though those aren't 'pro' grade saws, they hold up very well to a BUNCH of...

    harbor freight chain grainder

I have the newer dark red style one. It is flimsy junk, but I use it for badly mangled teeth to get them close to the right shape. Any chain I attack with the HF grinder also gets a filing before use. Basically, it allows me to take a chain from 3/4 of a tooth down to 1/4 of a tooth if it was...

    Brands of Chain

I use mostly Carlton. It's cheap and works fine. I tried one loop of Silver Streak chain and it was SOOOFT. Not good. I've also used Stihl and some old Oregon. Stihl, Oregon, and Carlton are all fine in my opinion. I have no issues filing any of them. On some of my saws the Carlton 'stretches'...

Husky 55 runs good until it gets hot

Good suggestions here. My 51 that did that needed a piston and ring along with a cylinder cleanup. I'd check for spark when saw is hot and also do a compression test when cold and when hot.

    The Stihl 362 disappointment

My powerstroke 7.3 diesels both have over 300,000 on them with no major repairs. The auto transmissions are original and don't shift odd or slip or anything (I use John Deere hy-gard low viscosity hydraulic fluid in them instead of Dex-III). My '95 acura has 254K on original...

Think i want a 60cc saw, which one?

Wait, some people let the chain get so dull that they have to push down on it to cut? Yikes. As for the best 60cc saw, I think that would have to be a 70-80cc saw with 60cc decals.

    Craftsman trouble

Is the crank key actually missing or is the "key" one of those deals where it's supposed to be a ridge built into the flywheel hole?

    Craig's List Super Score

Guys, guys, guys... why you tryin' to figure out Dano? There's already been a whole movie about him. It's called, "Me, Myself, and Irene"

390 loses battle with log pile

I like the custom clutch cover. I'm tired of mine plugging up when cutting with the grain. Think I'll open up mine like that.

    390xp/395xp replacement ?

I dunno. With how smooth and downright 'juicy' my 394 runs, I don't think I'd want a newer biggish saw. It's kinda nice to have a basic old carb and nothing complicated. For that matter, even my old 288s are very pleasant to run. Nice and smooth, good torque and rpms, ample oilers. If it were...

    562xp over 555?

I say the 555. But if you think you need more power than it, I'll go with used 372xp or 272xp instead of new 562xp.

    Alpina D-70S Value? Demand?

Neighbor has a mint condition D-70S. Looks like it's never been used except a very small amount of paint chipped away from the clutch cover. It was his father's saw but he didn't ever remember his dad using it. It's perfectly clean and I assume is in top notch condition. Anyone know of specific...

    288XP - repair

In what way was the piston/cyl broken? Did he run it without oil in the gas? If so, the cylinders can usually be cleaned up. I've had pretty good luck with the cheap ebay pistons, but don't use the piston pin clips if they seem cheap (almost always do). The 395 piston/cyl swap is doable, if I...

Best way to remove JB weld

Yep, my favorite way to remove JB Weld is to just heat it up with a little butane torch. JB Weld is fine. It's just an epoxy. Nothing special. It doesn't take the place of legit metal welding, but if something needs that sort of epoxy, then it does fine.

Whats with the LINKBUCKS crap!!!! rediculous, great way to end the site!!!

I think CrapCleaner is just called CCleaner now. But yes, that and Combofix are my go-to cleanup programs. And as for no sites being safe anymore, that's very true. You're more likely to get computer infections from religious websites than pron... no, really. The last one my comp got was when I...

Anyone ship/receive a saw in a trash bag?

I had a pair of new A460 heads with matching intake (this stuff is far from cheap) arrive at my house just tossed in a big box. All 3, together, no padding. Just 3 big chunks of now very dinged up and ruined hunks of otherwise new aluminum in a box with some big holes in it. :bang:

I want to buy a saw that will pull a 20" bar like nothing...

If it were me I'd be looking for an 80+ cc saw. A 70cc will be fine with a 20" bar, but to pull it 'like nothing' you'll need to step up a bit from there. A 3120 would do splendid but it's a little heavy.

    We Have A Little Problem

Looks like that cylinder was barely ported at all. I've just given up on porting. All you need to do is remove the cylinder completely and use a piece of wire to hold the spark plug above the piston. Then it's open air all around the piston so the intake and exhaust "ports" are unlimited.

562 xp vs. 372 xp vs. ms 461

I agree. For your bigger saw and a startup business, used is the way to go. Something like a 660 or 288xp. They'll run a 25" bar in soft or hardwood even if the chain is a little dull. If you happen to be using this saw a lot, maybe step up to a 385/390. If weight is a big factor, then the 372...
