    The Zen of wood splitting

ZeroLife, by 10 PM I've already been sleeping for two hours. I get up at 4:30 AM so I can get ready and do the 32 mile drive to work. On weekends I go to bed a little earlier so I can get up at 2 AM and drive 34 miles to the beach to do some surf fishing. If you're working nights, I can feel...

    The Zen of wood splitting

I don't want to get in to a battle here and extolling the Fiskars wasn't the point of this thread. I enjoy splitting wood and it has kept my mind off deer hunting and surf fishing which suffered after Sandy. Splitting wood, for me, is as enjoyable as any outdoor activity and maybe more so...

    The Zen of wood splitting

That's exactly what I love to do. Only thing now is it comes after I get back from surf fishing from 3 AM to 7 AM.

    Growing Mulberry Trees

If you go back and check the stumps, you should see new trees sprouting. Mulberry is dioecious, meaning there are male and female trees. The females are the ones that produce the berries - which I happen to love to eat. Mulberry is a prolific sprouter.

Thanks for getting it Zogger and Shade McCuiston.

I know how spidey felt with cabin fever!

At least I got to see if the new sump pump works. The garden looks pretty good except for the tomato plants missing the leader to some snacking deer. And, the mosquitos are nice and healthy and thick as dandelion fluff in the back.

    The Zen of wood splitting

I used to tell my friends about how relaxing it was to split wood but since they didn't do any splitting they just looked at me, smiled and shook their heads. I used to get a similar feeling with archery practice at the end of a particularly taxing day. But, my obsessive compulsive nature would...

    best small/light saw between $150-$200

I needed a small saw quick when one of my other saws was laid up. I happened to spot a factory reconditioned Echo 310 at a HD for $135. I took it home, gassed it up and put bar oil in and it fired on the second pull. One of the most reliable little saws I have. I thought it would be a loaner saw...

How much time-off am I allowed??

Well, at least when that three year old stack falls over, you won't have to reach too far to pick up the wood to re-stack. Ask me how I know:wink2:

The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat

Well, it took about an hour and a half but all 766 pieces of wood are back in the stack. I couldn't use the 4x4's for the base because they were buried beneath the collapsed wood and I didn't feel like moving everything multiple times. I guess my biggest issue is the squirrels that run up and...

Mid May 2013 & still burning

I like to burn firewood and look at the fire so I had the stove lit up yesterday when it was in the 60's outside and raining but colder in the house. Besides, the cat needed a place in front of the woodstove to curl up - he's been sleeping on top of the cable box to keep warm and sometimes his...

The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat

The metal ends are available at Home Depot or Lowes or most fireplace shops. It's a "U" shaped affair with squarish pieces welded onto the open end. These squarish (actually 2"x4") pieces slip over a two by four. So, with two 2x4's and these end peices, you have a rack. I can't give you a clear...

The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat

That's exactly how it broke. The ribs were horizontal. I prefer solid cement blocks but I ran out so I scrounged some cinder blocks from somewhere. Like I said, I'm going to try some lengths of 4x4 pressure treated wood. I just took down a grape arbor I had that was about 15 years old and the...

The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat

Friday, on the way to dinner with the family at a great little restaurant, I spotted a Pin Oak that had just been topped and cut up and a good quantity of the wood set at the curb. So, early Saturday I took another drive by and then went to get the pickup at my son's shop. I had to unload some...

Trailer break problem. I need help, I;='m Stumped

It sounds like your disappointments are starting to fade away into just memories and that's a good thing.

    Who Would Have Guessed

Personally, I think you may have already waited too long. The trailer has probably been scrapped by now. If it was me, I would have reported it to the police right away. If a bad guy took it, maybe they would catch him and hassle him enough so he doesn't do it again. If a friend borrowed it...

Trailer break problem. I need help, I;='m Stumped

Did you clean the oil pickup screen? The shop I now trust to work on my saws said always start with the simple things first. I had a saw on which the oiler quit. I took it to a shop and they told me it had a bad oil pump. They ordered a new one and a month later I had my saw back (they said they...

    Pole Saw recommendation

I can't believe all the folks that took the time to respond to this thread and offer an opinion. My daughter took my wife and me out to dinner at a restaurant run by a chef she knows that uses the beef that comes off the farm where she works and then we visited the farm to see the new lambs...

    Pole Saw recommendation

I've been working as an inspector with tree crews clearing trees around jug handles on the Interstates. To do the trimming, they often use pole saws. The crew mostly uses Stihl because they claim that they are more durable - Husky didn't work out for them. I was doing some splitting and looking...
