    stihl ms170 carb question

I don't have an answer to your specific question, however I am running a $10 dollar Chinese wt215 on my MS170 off of amazon thats working fine so far. Its been around 2 years since i did it and it gets occasional use. Really helped that little saw being able to muffler mod and richen it up for...

    My 026 project

So I never followed up to this thread with my completion because I was busy with life. however I did finish the port work, and the saw runs great in my opinion. I will have to find where I wrote down the port numbers but I ended up at .017 on the squish and pretty much dead on to the port...

    questions about you?

Automotive tech. Run/collect/repair saws for fun and firewood to heat my own home Biggest saw is a Ms660 biggest bar 36, mostly used for occasional milling or when I run across a really large tree. Cut most of my firewood with an 036 pro running 18 inch bar or the 660 with a 24.

MS 311 Crank Bearing Failure & Repair ???

Glad you got it together right! Those series saws are a little tedious to get apart but once you've done It a time or two its pretty simple. On another note, the initial bearing failure may have been caused by too much chain tension. Too much tension will stress the bearing.

    064 & ms660 compression test?

If the valve is not sealing correctly it could cause the same issue. My snap on one has comes with a bunch of spare valve cores.

    Meaningless model numbers

If you are looking at stihl saws; the number is roughly the displacement in cubic inches. Example 036,360,361 etc. is roughly 3.6 cu. in.

    064 & ms660 compression test?

Have you used that gauge to check compression on saws before? If it doesn't have a Schrader valve at the end of the adapter where it threads into the spark plug hole, it will not give you correct readings.

    Whoa ... "Stihl's" new saw

The biggest challenge (in my opinion) with the advancements will be creating the sensors and hardware that are needed to run the system. ( air/fuel ratio sensors, throttle position sensor, mass air flow sensor, fuel pump) Or am I wrong? What does m tronic use to monitor mixture control ...

Bought a used stihl 044 need help

I have pulled dozens on clutches always using rope in the spark plug hole and use a ratchet with socket to remove clutch. Is there radial play in the crankshaft ? Looks like that drum was rubbing the case?

Help with MS170 adjustable carb mod

I did the swap on my ms170 and it made a world of difference on how well it ran and power under load was much better. The reason you pull the plug And block the other hole is that the carb casting has provisions for different impulse configurations according to engine application. The ports...

    Stihl 039 value?

I wouldn’t pay more than 50 for it. I got a complete 039 with bar and chain from my uncle last year for free. It had been lean scored so I replaced the piston, cylinder, carb and oem fuel and impulse lines. Was in pretty good shape other than mildly faded plastic. After I ran it for a few...

Can someone please give me advice on what’s wrong with my chainsaw?

Try the things mentioned above, but you can also pull the spark plug when it wont run and get an idea of whats wrong. If the plug is wet then its probably losing spark(coil) but if the plug is dry its likely a fuel delivery issue.

Tuning by ear - how long did it take you?

I have never used a tach. I learned to tune by ear after i did a muffler mod on my first saw- the infamous MS290 :). I have found that it is much easier to hear the 4 stroking with a muffler mod because the saw is so much louder its easy to hear the burble. I have since tuned dozens of saws and...

    My 026 project

Thanks so much for the input! I will try to scrape/sand the squish band and get the base gasket deleted. According to my research on these saws I should be fine with anything over 0.015 for squish... opinions? @drf255 I don’t think I have the tools available to adjust the upper transfers...

    My 026 project

Ok thanks Brad. I was reading some of the other 026 threads and some port timing discussion trying to find what guys are running. I was reading where mastermind said he removed some of the piston skirt on an 026 to get the intake duration where he wanted it because it would require dropping...

    My 026 project

Ok so i printed the degree wheel and glued it to the flywheel, removed the keyway from the crank and zeroed the wheel as best possible with a stop in the cylinder. Here are my numbers Squish 0.019 Exhaust 96 Transfer 118-119 but it’s kind of difficult to see Intake is 68. @drf255 about the...

    My 026 project

Ok I will get the degree wheel set up at lunchtime today hopefully. I installed the piston and cylinder this morning and without the base gasket it was hitting the roof and would not turn. I installed the base gasket and measured squish with solder/micrometer and it is right at 0.019-0.020 so...

    My 026 project

Ok you’re probably right about getting the Lowes and uppers confused. I have been reading the “porting 101” thread and most of the pictures don’t work so I was just trying to visualize what was being discussed there I pictured it meaning opening the lower transfers toward the intake port to help...

    My 026 project

Thank you for the input. I thought I had read that widening the lower transfers was a commonly recommended thing to do along with smoothing out the lip, maybe I botched the job by doing that. ? I don’t have a degree wheel to measure the port timing, and so far I have not touched the bottom...
