    Stihl 390/391 piston cylinder

Are they the same? Brother toasted his 3 yr old 391, dealer tore it down and then pronounced it an epa problem after acknowledging it had plenty of oil. Always heard good things about this saw, brother vows he will never buy another Stihl.

    Stihl prices

Looked at a 500i yesterday, price now up to $1619. 2 years ago it was $1319, then $1519 to $1559 not long ago. About to price themselves out of my ballpark.

    Stihl 056?

Saw one in the local pawn shop yesterday, did these saws have the Bosch ignition module in them that was prone to failure and replacement not available or did I just make that up? Also had an 041, they were asking enough for both of them I thought!

    Falling question

I have noticed that when people bore cut a tree they always use the 45 degree down dogtooth cut to release the tree. Saw a guy get his arm broke on Youtube because it pinched and twisted his saw as it lifted and fell. I have done a few lately where I made the bypass cut parallel to and below...

    Stihl availability

Parts guy at one of the local Stihl dealers told me he could not get saws because a container full of saws enroute from Germany had fallen off the boat. Anyone else heard this? Also said Stihl had removed local farm and feed store as a dealer, 2nd one around here that I know of, would they be...

    Sectioning logs

Cut a big walnut for my brother Saturday, kind of wasp wasted but minimum circumference was 82" at 16', left the log at 19' just below a fork. Cut off an encapsulated knot at 4' to make certain it was not hollow in the butt. Basically I think I have about 12' of veneer wood in the middle and...

    "Highly valuable" walnut thread

Actually I think this one is worth a few bucks and we were sweating bullets until it hit the ground and did not split. Nephew and I split the saw duty. 28" diameter at 16 feet. Dad had poured mortar into a knothole many years ago and it was encased, which is why it has the whittling done on the...

    Cutting veneer walnut

Top blew out of brothers tree and I was pretty certain it would have a veneer log in it, watched a jillion vid's of guys cutting no hinge, bucket cut etc and really was not comfortable with any of them. Decided to put a beavertail in the center and snip the sapwood on the edges and then just...

    Selling small number of trees

Brother needs to clear a small area which includes 2 walnuts of 74" and 88" dbh circumference, at least 16' of clear log and straight as an arrow. He has the ability to haul them, question is how do you market them? I believe they are veneer grade so if he drives to a sawmill and they unload and...

    455- throwing chain

Friends Husky, no local shop so I brought it home, never worked on outboard clutch before. Shaft seems to have some in/out movement and the spur gear seems out of line with the bar. Spur is chewed up some on the very inside but otherwise OK. there is no movement of the flywheel side of the...

    High temp adhesives

Anyone ever used high temp metal adhesives in place of brazing or welding a muffler? My 2 lower bolts are broke off in the casing so I use the internal bolts to attacher muffler with access holes drilled in the front. I have tried welding the front half of the muffler in place but it ends up...

    036 Pro won't stay running

Saw starts on choke and it will stay running if I leave the start trigger locked but as soon as I get on the throttle acts like it is running out of gas and I get maybe one cut out of it before it dies. Saw is 17 yrs old and carb is original, I suspect it needs rebuilt or replaced. Any other...

    036 sprocket spec change?

Tried to replace a 3/8-7 sprocket yesterday but one I got from the dealer is too small. Did Stihl change this one sometime and if so is it still available or will I need to change a drum also? Looked at Bailey's and they had a 3/8-7 minispline???

There goes 3 days of my life............

With 20/20 hindsight, I should have cut that maple first. Just hate to cut a good tree, particularly when that hickory wiped out 5 more when the top fell.

    MS-290 rebuild

Uncle gave me one that had been straight gassed, quite obvious that getting to the cylinder is going to be much tougher than my 036's. Am I going to end up hating this? Is the 039 conversion worthwhile? Probably not enough difference in weight and power to make me want to add this one to the...

    036 Pro throttle linkage

Replaced an impulse line and was getting ready to tear down the carb when I noticed the linkage arm was not staying in the notches and saw would not choke. Think this is a 2000 model saw and guessing it is just excessively worn. Any ideas as to a fix? Usually my backup saw and I can take rear...

    sassafras beams?

passed a load of of approx. 6" x 12" x 20' beams on a semi today, pretty certain they were sassafras but I have never heard of a market for such thing. Any speculation on their intended end use? Still had some included bark so it wasnuttin' fancy

    Leaner technique

Anyone else seen this? Just curious as to the pro's and con's. I think Wade is a lot smarter than he sounds sometimes

If a tree chairs in the woods and no one hears it.................

Can the guys on AS still make fun of you?????????? Chaired 2 today, both of them about 20 degrees off horizontal and I knew both of them would do it, eroded gully and hardly enough room to put a face in. I grew long arms and nibbled the edges till they broke. Wanted to show buddy what...

    036 Pro revving in cut

Temp was about 8 degrees this morning, one of my 036 Pro's would start picking up rpm's about 10 seconds into every cut, spent much of the morning worried about an air leak somewhere. This is the first saw I ever put a p/c on and I think I may have the high needle just about maxed out to be on...
