So I wrote to Stihl...

...to ask what the kit part number is based on my saw's serial number. And this is the answer I got:

"We are in receipt of and thank you for your e-mail. The no hand guard style 028's cannot be converted to the hand guard style."

I think this answer came via an overseas call-and-answer center or something. Then I wrote back and told them that it DOES have a hand guard, but not a brake. Here is what I think:

Lakeside, PES+, Gary, and a few of the other guys on AS know more about Stihl products than the Stihl employees.

They gave you accurate information

The very early 028 had no guard and no cast-in spaces for all the brake parts.

When the spring loaded hand guards came out was about the same time the brake was available as an option.

One must always remember that if your question goes to a different country many times there can be a language barrier that complicates communication.

Diagram

Does anyone have a diagram they could put up of all the parts that are needed to put on a chain brake. I am looking for a diagram of the type where the spring does not overlap its self.

Thanks,

J

Those pics really help clear up the difference between the two styles, I need the older style.

Thanks.

Thanks from me too to PES+. I am going to try to get around to taking my saw apart to compare to PES's pix so I can determine what I need.

PES,
do you have a price for a complete kit:
- $ price for old style kit
- $ price for new style kit

I will order from you if my saw can take one of your kits and you have one in stock.

I need an Old Style Stihl 028WB chain brake

I'm not sure if anybody still checks this thread, but I have an Old style 028WB like the ones in the pictures above that I'd like to install a brake kit on. I've taken it apart and it will definitely take a brake, but I need the old style band that doesn't double over itself. My Local Stihl Dealer can't get the parts for me, and I'm not having success finding it online. Does anybody know where I can the parts I need?

Hi gang, I am a long time lurker of this website but I am in need of some help now and my apologies for resurrecting a very very old thread. I have a few saws - a couple stihls and a jonsered. The saw that I'm working on right now I recently inherited from my father. It is a 028 WB without the chain break. As you can imagine I would love to keep the saw in its full glory and use it but it really does need a chain break for safety reasons. I read through this string but still need your help and I'm posting a picture of what mine looks like. I sure would appreciate if anyone could point me in the right direction to gather these parts.

Hi Guys, I posted this on another similar thread on the site but wanted to do the same here I hopefully double my chances! I sourced the 1118-007-1002 and received the parts. the problem is there were no instructions and I am not 100% sure on how they go together. Does anyone have a picture, schematic or instructions for adding this kit to a 028 WB? I would sure appreciate any help.

Figured it out. Here are some pictures to help then next guy:

This picture is missing a washer that sits on top of the "cam" and under the straight portion of the spring
