I've been wanting a 461 badly, and yesterday I ran across the MS382. 72cc and 5.3hp and only weighs 13.6 lbs. So my wants changed. Now I have a chance to buy an 038 Mag II for $200.

Can I convert the engine to the 382 parts? Will the top cover and starter covers swap? Last question, is the 038 capable with a 24" bar?

Cant help with parts compatibility but I will say my 038 mag runs a 25" bar with authority.

Its has lots of grunt, I can lean on it and just keeps going..

Love that saw.

Its crazy how the 038 AV has a different CC than the Mag and Mag II. If the saw is worth fixing, I'm going to buy it. I'll swap the 360 back to a 20" and use the 038 for the 25".

I was originally looking for a 044/440 saw. I read some people's posts on the 038 mag saying it was heavy and slow so I was on the fence about it initially..

Now that I've cut many cords with it (I noodle most of my wood with it to) I'm 100% happy with it. It's not a screamer saw, but man does it pull for a 70cc saw. It tractors through whatever I cut it with.

Mine starts easy (3 pulls) and really it's what 1 pound more then a 044??

And if you like a 20" bar try one on an 038, I have one for mine and it really balances nice with it.

Like I said "I love that saw"
