It is possible, and yes there is a thread by MadProfessor if I recall. Requires some modification to the cylinder mounting screw holes. Good luck.

It's been done a few times by me and also by others.

1) The bolt holes in the cyl need to be slotted to match the 038S case.

2) You can grind the outside of the cyl where the bolts seat or turn down the heads to allow them to seat.

3) You may have to open up the access holes in the fins to let the t27 torx to get to the bolts.

4) Check that the cyl has clearance to sit on the sealing surface of the case

5) I've used the 038M gasket

Stihl mentions that 038 AV cases may need some machining to fit a 038S cylinder to 038 AV case.

The 038S to 038M conversions, I've done, did not need this.

Mad Proffessor is the top one on this I think, but I'll put in my bit. You can do it fine with only a chain file (15/64), grinder and drill. Use the file to slot the jug holes, and the drill/grinder combo to 'turn' the bolt heads down.

You'll also need to mod the muffler or buy a mag muffler.

Might say I have been using this saw a fair bit and it runs like a real demon. Love it. With the muffler mod it pulls a 20" 8 pin burried in dry oak or 30" 7 pin burried in dry beech, so has the grunt
