I've heard it called Mock Orange or Hedge Apple. Its usually planted in hedge rows. Its pretty hard, but I've never seen it get to big.

My mother in law has a huge hedgeapple in their yard, @3-4
foot trunk. It is by far the best firewood you can find. The
native americans made their bows out of the wood, due to their
strength and interlocking grain, it was used in the west as a natural fencerow for cattle.

OK I can sleep tonight now that I know what osage orange is.It is the same thing as what they call hedge apple here.I never saw any here get above 10 or 12" at the butt.

PS What do you guys call the trees that get the 1 or 2 foot long beans on it?

Heres a link to the Brainfruit trees, we used to love trying to smash these when I was little. I've got some seeds somewhere round here that I was going to try and plant this spring.
