Recently bought a 1960s 44" tree spade with a kohler motor. There is no writing or identification left on it. The spade starts but runs really rich. You have to pull on the throttle cable to keep it running and sometimes flames shoot out.

My question is if anyone knows any solutions or what carb would replace this carb? Even when it runs it sounds like it is 4 stroking and occasionally will rev decent but that is few and far between. It dies if I let go of the cable most of the time. Occasionally it will keep running but barely and sputters the whole time.

Your engine is most likely a K-series... maybe a K160? No other reason it was the most widespread of the family. The carburetor is most likely a Carter.

You can find replicas of Carter carburetors around without too much effort: just make sure the choke will work with your setup or you can easily modify it.
Original Carter carburetors are on the expensive side regardless of conditions and while you can find rebuild kits for them, these rebuild kits can cost twice as much a replica carburetor.

Thanks for the info!
