Piston is toast, cylinder will clean up.

First I use some 200 grit wet/dry and diluted dish detergent when sanding. It gets the oil and any carbon off, so acid can do it's thing on the aluminum. Then a long q-tip with acid to take off underlying transfer. Rinse with water then repeat as required. Finish up with 400 grit.
 
Well I sanded and oven cleaned the cylinder. Pics attached. I THINK it looks okay now. I notice a groove that I will not be able to get out.

That one line probably won’t sand out. Get it down to where you can’t catch a fingernail on it and leave it. Other more general discoloration should all sand away. If you think you might be about to sand through the plating then you probably are. Stay away from port edges. That’s where the plating goes first.
