Is an 4" cylinder make enough power to split oak, elm, forked stuff,......
there are 4" cylinders (2500 psi) for 120 bucks would it be worth it, or go 5".

Jack

A 4" cylinder will split almost any thing you can lift onto the splitter if you have just a simple wedge with no wings. If you add wings to the wedge or use a 4-way wedge a 5" cylinder would be better.

$120 is a good price -- they run about $180 here plus tax -- if the 4" won't split it use the chunk in a campfire

MIne is a 4" and 5hp. I usually wind up the season with a dozen or so chunks that I section with a saw. I wish I had a bigger motor though. Mine is running 6x1 reduction gear to pull a 13gpm pump (of course it isn't putting out 13gpm) which makes for a slow cycle.

Yea I never had an spliter but mine is almost done, but with out the cyl.
I have about 22 28" dead elms I have to cut down and there freaking tall, cant split elm with an maul.

thanks guys

Just avoid knotty wood and you will be fine. Avoid the dried out aspen and willow and etc and you will be have no problems.

With only 5hp and two stage pump will make a world of difference
