I have a Iron and Oak ~20 Ton Vertical/Horizontal log splitter with a 5 horse Briggs. I was wondering if I wood (get it?) be able to run a 4 way head on there. We do have some fairly tough cherry and locust, so I mostly be running it through the ash. It would also be nice to take it off rather quickly for the bigger/harder stuff.

What do you guys think?? Does the Briggs need a turbo??

4 ways are for straighter logs.

the nasty twisted stuff with knots and crotches is tough on everything, especially with the 4 way.

my 20 ton American with a 5.5 HP Honda would split normal straight grained logs no problem with the 4 way. even 30 inchers.

where can I find such an item? It has a sloped single wedge on there now and Ive seen some 4 way slip ons (and I thought the wood inuendos were funny!) but I dont know if they would work with the current setup.

Idealy it would be easily removable for the bigger/tougher stuff.

A few things to keep in mind with the northern 4 way.(i own one)
#1 wedge should be at the END!! not for a H/V splitter, with a pusher wedge.
(from what i have read you will blow hydraulic seals )

#2 The 4 way rides up and down on your wedge thus dulling it.
#3 I doubt a 5.5 hp will do.(I run an 11hp/16 gpm pump 24 ton)and it struggles at times.
#4 Not for knotty wood.
I tore the( I beam) on mine trying to split some cottonwood.
Pull the 4 way off for that stuff.
#5 you will learn to weld if you over do it!
#6 buy the small 4 way
I can add more, but i think you need a larger different splitter for the job.

P.S. They are great if you have the machine that will run them!
70 cords this year on the 4 way,it will break or snap soon.
