Does anyone use a picaroon for frozen birch? If not, what do you use? Mine just doesn't penetrate frozen birch and I'm tired of bending over to pick up foot long chunks let alone move larger stuff.

Are you hooking the end of yer picaroon? If you have access to a torch and small anvil put a nice sharp hook in the end (about 1/4 in.), more like an 'L'shouldn't have a problem with frozen wood imho.
Pic-a-roon, btw, is a handtool commonly used for turning slabs, axe-type handle, head is usually 1 1/2"-2" thick with a 3-4in tapered point, its a real back-saver. We always 'hooked' the tips at the mill as it works well for tossing chunks of debris and gives a bit of bite when flipping slabs, as opposed to the straight stock points.
Just a bit of 0.02$ fer the morning :D

Pickeroon

Last winter I did not have any luck sticking frozen wood.

I will try again this winter, with a better hook. The "handy hook" from Peavey is one awsum tool.
