Another Tree ID

Found this in the back yard, completely dead, no branches, no bark. It's extremely hard, not sure what it could be, I started burning some tonight but decided to see if anyone knew what it was.





Any ideas?

My guess is elm and dutch elm disease.

I though elm because of the no bark but the color threw me a little. I'm use to seeing them alive I guess

Rays look like White Oak.

I would think oak except for the lack of any bark or separate colors. Elm seems right.

Could it be dogwood? I don't know of many trees with growth rings so small and close together. Also, it's not very big in diameter....are there big pieces or are they all relatively small?

The rays say oak to me.

Because it has a pencil heart, I dont think it's elm nor oak. My guess is beech or rock maple.

@300zx_tt can you split that piece and post a pic of the fresh split side?

the way that wood is cracked looks like Poplar or Elm. I'll go out on a limb and say Poplar

The trunk of the tree had a diameter of about 7-8 inches

Ironwood,(hornbeam) is a possibility. First pic looks like it, and that is about full grown size, and it hard as heck.

From the grain, I'd go with Beech.
