I'm not a commercial tree care professional, but I am trying to be more adept at caring for trees than your average "Guy with a chainsaw". I will never do any sort of tree service professionally as I work in aviation and am more than happy with my career. I just want to expand my knowledge and get better at tree management. I looked at all the ANSI A300 standards and to buy all of them it's like $200 if not more. Is their a way someone like myself can get these standards or something similar without the hefty price tag?

You don't need them all. What are you doing?
Fertilization?
Pest management?
Planting?
Pruning?

The following are NOT recommended for the DIYer (this, from an avid DIYer!)
Tree Risk Assessment
Cabling and bracing
Lightning protection
Integrated Vegetation management (power line clearing)
Root management

You probably don't need Management for most DIY tree work.

Frankly, the ANSI standards are not instructional. They are standards...the user should have a knowledge base before trying to abide by them. ISA has Best management practice books that are more instructional: https://wwv.isa-arbor.com/store/category/117/
