Autumn blaze maple problems

I bought a autumn blaze maple and the top died? I tried to prune it but it’s not growing tall like my other one, they are both 3 years old. What should I do? I keep fertilizing it but it’s just creating leaves and not growing. Seems like the main stem has died??

personally stop fertilizing - that is creating more leaf growth as such. also have to give it time to establsih a new leader. it may not be the perfect specimen but a leader usually emerges or multiple will and then you can influene it from there.

Ok thank you very much for the information, I didn’t want to take it out and put another one in. I just hope it doesn’t look stupid when it is full size. It’s still young so I hope it works its self out.

as they say - patience grasshopper. just watch it grow and give it time and try to guide if neded and as necessary. ugly duckling takes time to mature into a decent specimen.

The stump area is good, I’ll send pics later today. I took to long to plant the tree into the ground and the top died on me it seems.
