I have several large Black Walnut trees on my property. Most have ivy (or some sort of vine) fully engulfing the trunk all the way up... Friends have told me to cut the vines because they might harm the tree. Is this true? What do the vines actually do to harm the tree? and is the proper treatment to simply cut the vines in order to kill them?

The vines will not actually harm the tree directly, however they will hide any potential problems with the trunk, such as decay or cavities which may form. If the vines grow unchecked, they may add enough weight or wind resistance to the branches to cause breakage. I would encourage you to cut the vines at the base of the tree. Of course, if it's poison ivy you definitely want to get rid of it. Be careful.
